Fire Station 1
Construction and Project Updates

The City of Barrie Fire and Emergency Services are currently in the process of designing a new home for the Fire Station Headquarters; complete with Communications Centre, and the City of Barrie’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).  The
Design Architect retained for this project is Salter Pilon Architects in partnership with Lett Architects.  The Project has received Infrastructure Stimulus Funding from the Federal and Provincial Government as part of the economic action plan
with a requirement that the project be substantially complete by March 30, 2011.  In order to meet the timeline the City of Barrie has proceeded with Construction Management and has retained Vanbots a division of Carillion Construction as the
projects CM.

The proposed facility addresses not only the current needs, which include the impact from Barrie’s growth over the years on the Barrie Fire and Emergency Services, but the future growth needs for communications, fire prevention,
training, and suppression.  To eliminate this growth space at this time, would only serve to postpone the ultimate requirement to build the space in the future at higher costs and reduce efficiencies in service delivery.

The Leisure, Transit and Facilities Department coordinated a comprehensive building program review process with the participation of the Barrie Fire and Emergency Services, Barrie’s Community Emergency Planner, the consultants and their
sub-consultants. This resulted in a needs analysis review and schematic building foot print of 38,600 square feet to meet the needs identified by Barrie Fire and Emergency Services and to include an Emergency Operations Centre, resulting in
the completion of the Schematic Design phase of the project.
The existing Schematic Design incorporates exciting urban design elements of an urban plaza, a heritage room, a bell tower (a traditional fire hall element), and interpretation
panels and public art to enhance this facility in the provision of a civic gateway into the City Centre. With the conceptual design provided, regular facility tour participants from school groups and the general public will enjoy an enhanced on
site experience.
