BUILDING SERVICES DEPARTMENT
Welcome to the City of Barrie Building Services Department. Regulations today are intended to protect the health, safety, order and comfort of our citizens, enhancing the quality of life for the community. Our department administers and enforces regulations from the Zoning By-law, the Property Maintenance By-law, the Pool Enclosure By-law and the Ontario Building Code.
This site will provide information and guidance for the most commonly asked questions. Our staff will be pleased to receive your call or e-mail if you require further assistance.

BRANCHES
The Building Services Department is located on the 8th floor of city hall and consists of the following branches;
Building Standards Branch
- Processes applications for building permits, septic permits, sign permits, pool enclosure permits and retaining wall permits.
- Provides building information as requested for property transactions and general enquiries.
- Reviews all permit applications and planning applications to confirm by-law compliance.
- Provides zoning information requested for property transactions and general enquiries.
- Responds to complaints and enforces compliance as necessary.
- Processes applications to the Committee of Adjustment for minor variances and/or consents.
Inspection Branch
- Conducts standard inspections of buildings, sewage systems, signs, pool fences and retaining walls under construction to confirm compliance with the Ontario Building Code and municipal by-laws.
- Conducts standard inspections of lot grading in new subdivisions to confirm compliance with the Subdivider’s agreement.
- Responds to complaints and enforces compliance as necessary.
Property Standards Branch
- Provides property standards information as requested for property transactions.
- Responds to complaints and enforces compliance as necessary.
