ENVIRONMENTAL OPERATIONS
As Central Ontario’s premier waterfront city, Barrie strives to afford its current and future residents varied opportunities to enjoy an enhanced and secure quality of life in a prosperous and ecologically sustainable community. To achieve true sustainability, the City of Barrie is striving to manage our resources in a manner that minimizes our ecological footprint while providing services to all members of our community at the least possible cost. Environmental Operations is responsible for supplying the citizens of Barrie with the following important services :
- The operation of our landfill and associated waste reduction programs so the people of Barrie can continue to benefit from well planned and managed environmental operations.
Disconnect to Protect!
Each year, thousands of litres of clean water enter the City of Barrie's Water Pollution Control Centre and it is costing Barrie residents money! A large amount of this water is from illegal sump pump and downspout connections. To find out more about inflow and infiltration prevention, click here to download our brochure 'Disconnect to Protect'. Click here to download our how-to-guide 'How to Disconnect your Downspout'.
Catch the Rain!
Rain barrels and water-efficient gardening can also help reduce inflow and infiltration. For tips on saving water and money, click here to download our water-efficient lawn and garden brochure. Click here to download our how-to-guide 'Rain Barrel Use'.
Grease Management for your Home
Fats, oils and grease can cause serious problems for your sanitary sewer collection systems. Sewer pipes blocked by grease are an increasingly common cause of sewage overflows. Grease gets into the sanitary sewer from household drains. Sewer backups can cause damage to homes, health hazards and threaten the environment. To find out more about managing grease in your home click here to download our brochure 'Grease Management for your Home'.
Storm and Sanitary Sewers
In order to maintain properly functioning sanitary and storm sewers, hazardous materials such as paints and fuels must not enter the municipal sewer system. To find out more about storm and sanitary sewers click here to download our brochure 'Storm and Sanitary Sewers'.
