On April 2, 2016, the fourth Barrie Choralfest Concert will be presented at W.A. Fisher Auditorium, Central Collegiate. The evening performance will highlight over 100 voices singing together accompanied by the Huronia Symphony Orchestra. This bi-annual event is one of the greatest celebrations currently advertised in Barrie and regional event calendars.
At its core, Barrie Choralfest is a visionary collaboration of four exciting and dynamic groups, BRAVADO Show Choir, Lyrica Chamber Choir, Huronia Symphony and the King Edward Choir with the addition of exceptionally talented high-school students from the Simcoe County District School Board. The soloists featured are amongst the finest musical talents to be found on Canadian soil.
This year's performance "Carmen" is based on the short novel by Prosper Merrimee, music by Georges Bizet, libretto by Henri Melhac and Ludovic Halevy.
The enchanting Carmen is drawn and captivated by the indifferent Corporal of Dragoons, Don Jose. She succeeds in convincing him to forget about his hometown sweetheart, Micaela and his honour as a soldier. Don Jose deserts the army and Micaela to join a band of smugglers to which Carmen belongs. But soon, becoming bored with him, Carmen discards Don Jose in favour of the toreador, Escamillo. Don Jose’s burning jealousy sets the stage for his final unsuccessful attempt to win Carmen back. She spurns him yet again and as she awaits the arrival of Escamillo from the arena, Don Jose, in a fit of rage, stabs her to death.
