Inside the Music

January 13, 2015
Showtimes:
January 13, 8:00pm

Afie Jurvanen isn’t from the Bahamas. He’s a Finnish-Canadian who was raised right here in Barrie.

This concert marks a triumphant return for the hometown kid and it’s in support of his brand new record, ‘Bahamas is Afie’, released on Jack Johnson’s label, Brushfire Records. Since 2009 he's been making music and touring the world under the name Bahamas - writing songs about sunsets, love affairs, and making out with crooked smiles. Through simple arrangements, he charts an escape route from the snow-belt to the coral reefs.

‘Bahamas is Afie’ is a coming of age record. Self-titled and self-produced - It is the next step in the evolution of Jurvanen's songcraft, guitar mastery, and melodic pop hooks - following his previous full lengths ‘Pink Strat’ (2009) and ‘Barchords’ (2011). ‘Bahamas is Afie’ is a sparse, moving, headphone album, complemented by a more developed arrangement of strings, brass, winds, orchestral percussion, and chamber choruses that transport the listener from moving seas to a search for strength, to a place of resolve and comfort.

"This feels like a self-titled record to me. The songs seem to have a definitive quality to them, and they ended up going to all kinds of unexpected musical places. I really thought I was going to make a traditional folk record but as the recording evolved I started having some pretty different ideas. I started playing this game like, 'what would 80s Van Morrison do if he were producing this?’ or ‘what about John Williams?' It all came together in a simple, naive and direct way and I was really energized by the process. And I got to play a lot of guitar...I feel like I'll get another chance to make a folkie record somewhere down the road. For now, this is me."

Steve Patterson - I LAUGH therefore I think

Shantero Productions

April 18, 2015
Showtimes:
April 18, 7:30pm
Hot on the heels of his critically acclaimed national tour This Is Not Debatable, Steve Patterson returns with I Laugh Therefore I Think, a rollicking slice of hilarity that will make you laugh, think, or – at the very least – think about laughing!

Known foremost as host of CBC’s hit comedy radio show The Debaters, Steve Patterson is also considered to be one of the country’s premier comedic talents, being named twice, first in 2011 and again in 2013, as Best Male Stand-Up Comic at the Canadian Comedy Awards. It’s an opinion universally endorsed by peers and media alike: “There’s no debate about it, Steve Patterson is hysterical. Don’t miss him” - Rick Mercer; “one of this country’s sharpest wits” - Montreal Gazette; “wickedly funny” - Halifax Chronicle Herald

Joining Steve is special guest Ivan Decker, a Vancouver-based comedian who has been heralded as one of the fastest rising stars in Canada. A 10-year stand-up comedy veteran at age 29, Ivan reveals the humour hiding in the everyday trials of today's young adults with careful dissection, brilliant timing, and intelligent observation. Fans of The Debaters will immediately recognize Ivan as a frequent and popular guest.

I Laugh Therefore I Think: A current, sometimes irreverent, original 90-minute one man show stoked with Steve's hallmark gift for capturing a funny turn of a phrase, a smattering of original satirical songs and a glee that comes from the opportunity to express opinions beyond the bounds as moderator of The Debaters ... things that we all laugh about first and think about second. Or do we think first and laugh second? Or do we just laugh for a second before thinking, 'Oh. Should I have laughed at that?' All this and more. Buckle up for an all-systems-go blast-off to the land of laughter!
