City Centre Revitalization

City Centre Development Opportunities

The revitalization process will build upon existing assets and blend future developments seamlessly with historical properties, creating an inclusive “front porch experience” for Barrie’s waterfront. We understand that to create a truly involving downtown and waterfront community there must be activities for all seasons and all types of users, and a mixed use community that attracts private developments that emphasize an exciting lifestyle dedicated atmosphere.

Together we are working to build a vibrant, exciting city centre and waterfront that will serve to reinvigorate the heart of Barrie with a new look and commitment to our community. Together we can develop the partnerships that will allow us to put this plan into action; contact us to find out how you can become part of this initiative.

Community Improvement Planning Areas

The City has developed three Community Improvement Plans (CIP's); Downtown: The Next Wave, Allandale Centre, and the Georgian College Neighbourhood. The CIP's offer guidance in the form of development objectives for each community, and provide a future vision for the revitalization of these defined areas.

Through the CIP's, the City has developed a financial incentives program to stimulate and encourage development and redevelopment in the three key areas of the City. Loan and grant packages are available for commercial and residential projects that increase the functionality of existing building, promote the development of vacant and underutilized sites, and improve or restore exterior building facades and signage.
