If Barrie was a village of 100...

7 billion people share this planet. 145,000 people share this city. Who are we? What do we look like? What can we learn from others?

Understanding Barrie’s diversity helps ensure our community considers the needs of all residents. It allows for a better understanding of different perspectives that residents bring from across Canada and the world, to help our community grow economically and socially. It is important to understand who we are to better plan for residents who have been here for generations and for those who are new to Barrie.

Using statistics from 2014, we have reduced Barrie to a village of 100 people so it’s easier to understand and appreciate our diversity. This is our village, and it includes you.

Sexual Orientation, Disability, and Poverty
Barrie 2014 Statistics: Sexual Orientation, Disability, and Poverty

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) individuals, people with disabilities (including physical, visual, hearing, developmental disability, learning disability, brain injury and mental health issues) and individuals who live below the poverty line all live in our village.

Reliable ways to quantify or categorize demographics about sexual orientation and gender identity, people with special needs and those who live below the poverty line have not been established so far so we are unable to report how many villagers identify in these categories.
