Tax Rebate Programs

Charity Tax Rebate Program

Bill 140, the “Continued Protection for Property Taxpayers Act, 2000”, requires all municipalities to provide a rebate program for Charities from 2001 onwards. In the City of Barrie, charities and similar organizations will continue to be eligible for rebates of 40% (or a % prescribed by the Minister of Finance) of their property tax paid if they own or occupy commercial or industrial assessed properties. An annual application must be made after January 1 of the year and no later than the last day of February of the following year by the charity or similar organization in order to qualify for the rebate program.

All relevant tax payment information must accompany the application form in order for a rebate to be calculated and granted. For charities and similar organizations that rent their premises, proof of the amount of taxes paid or included in their rent (based on square footage occupied) must be obtained from their landlord. Failure to provide this information with the rebate application may disqualify the organization from a rebate for that year.
