Welcome to City of Barrie Fitness.  Safe, reliable, convenient centres are located at the East Bayfield Community Centre, Holly Community Centre, Allandale Recreation Centre and Victoria Village Activity Centre.  Each centre offers a variety of equipment and friendly, qualified staff are happy to help answer your questions and get you started. 

What's included in your Fitness Pass?

Anyone age 14+ are welcome to join us for their workout.  Pay as you go or purchase a value saving pass.  A variety of Pass options are available.  Click here for Fitness Pass Info and Rates.  Your Fitness Pass gives you access to any of the following amenities:

  • Weight Equipment
    Whether you are a beginner or veteran, a wide selection of machines and free weights will help you get the most out of your workout.
  • Cardio Equipment
    An assortment of treadmills, ellipticals, steppers, bikes and rowing machines gives you a variety of options.
  • Drop In Fitness Classes
    With a wide range of classes at Fitness Centre locations from Pilates-Fit and Yoga-Fit to Cardio Pump and Gentle Low Impact, there is something to suit every interest and goal. Click here for the current Fitness schedule.
  • Go Swimming

  • New Effective February 23, 2012 Drop in Gymnasium access at Holly and East Bayfield for 3 month and Yearly pass holders only.

What specialized amenities are available?

Specialized amenities are available as separate or add-on options. Please see rates below, for applicable fees.

Fitness centers are closed on the following statutory holidays (New Years Day, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Boxing Day).   Fitness Center hours are modified during these times: Family Day, Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. Also during July and August.

What are the rules of Etiquette?

Please be aware that your actions have an effect on others. To ensure a safe, rewarding and positive experience for all users and staff, please treat everyone with respect and dignity.  Unsafe, disrespectful or inappropriate behavior could result in removal of pass/program privileges.

General Fitness Center Safety

  • No coats, boots, gym bags or purses in the Fitness Center. Please use a locker and lock to secure your personal belongings.
  • Use the safety features on all equipment.
  • If you are unfamiliar with the use of the equipment, please ask staff for assistance before using it.  Improper use can result in injury.
  • Proper fitness attire must be worn including athletic shoes – no sandals or other footwear.
  • No food or glass containers.  Water only in a closed container.
  • Please ask a Staff if you require any assistance

Respect and Courtesy

  • Share- Remember that you and those around you in the fitness center are all neighbors, so share the weights and machines if need be.
  • Please wear clean athletic clothing, practice good hygiene and avoid wearing heavy scents.
  • Please use the disinfected wipes provided and wipe down the equipment after each use.
  • Stereo to be operated by staff only.
  • Fair Play & Code of Conduct Policy in effect Verbal or physical abuse of staff or other users will not be tolerated and you will be asked to leave the facility without refund.
  • Wrist bands must be worn and visible to staff.  Please help keep your facility clean and dispose of the wrist band and tabs in the garbage after use.

Group Fitness and Aqua Fitness Classes

  • All classes are co-ed and are open to all fitness levels and experience. All equipment is available on a first come, first serve basis.  Arrive early to avoid disappointment.
  • Always work at a pace that is suitable to your current fitness level and modify when necessary.
  • Wipe down the equipment with a disinfectant wipe after each use.
  • Certain classes (cycle and pumped up) have limited space.  Sign up is available 15 minutes before each class.  You must be in the center to sign up.  Due to popularity, only one signature per person.
  • Classes and instructors are subject to change without notice.  All attempts are made to provide a quality alternative to the regular program.  Sorry refunds will not be issued if the class or instructor changes.

Technology Usage Guidelines?

The City of Barrie believes in protecting the privacy and well-being of all users. The rising use of multi-use technology such as camera cell phones provides a new challenge to ensuring the privacy of our patrons. We ask that: 

  • As a general courtesy and respect for others privacy the use of electronic devices for the purpose of conversations, text messaging and picture taking is NOT permitted in Fitness Centres and change rooms.  We politely ask that users please leave the area to address personal matters.  Thank you.
  • Facility users should immediately report any concerns related to others using camera cell phones.

What are some of the rules for using the Cardio Equipment?

  • Sign up procedure is in effect for all Cardio Machines
  • Sign up for a maximum of 2 time slots (30 minutes)
  • Time is based on the wall clock, not the machine timer
  • Be respectful of others – be on time and end on time
  • Wipe down the equipment with a disinfectant wipe after each use

What are some rules for using the Weight Equipment?

  • Do not remove weight plates and dumbbells from designated areas
  • Return all equipment to the proper location after each use
  • Wipe down the equipment with a disinfectant wipe after each use
  • Be respectful of others – allow others to share equipment between sets
  • Be respectful of others - loud grunting, banging and dropping weights are disruptive to others using the center

Why should I purchase a Fitness Centre Pass?

The City of Barrie offers various passes to help you get the most value for your money. Choose the membership type that fits your healthy, active lifestyle. Please see our Recreation Barrie Guide for rates and registration information. 

Can I give a pass as a gift?

Need the perfect present for someone special? Your friends and family can use a City of Barrie gift card for memberships, personal training and other Recreation services. Cards are available in any amount you choose. Please talk to our staff at any of our recreation centres information desks or call 705-739-4223.

Can I bring my own Personal Trainer?

No. The City of Barrie’s Insurance only extends to those who are City of Barrie employees, who are fully trained on the proper use of the equipment provided in the Fitness Centers. Non-City of Barrie staff is prohibited from providing any kind of instruction on fitness equipment.

Can I cancel my fitness pass?

If you are still not satisfied please contact us at the numbers noted on this page. If you need to cancel your membership, you may do so at any time and receive a pro-rated refund (minus a $15 administration fee).

Are lockers available?

Day Lockers are available for use while you are using the Fitness Center. Please remove all of your personal belongings after each visit. You must provide your own lock or are available to rent at the Information Desk for a refundable fee of $5.00.

Don’t be a victim of theft. Lock your belongings up for security and leave valuable items at home.

Why do I have to wear a wrist band?

Wearing a wrist band that is visible to staff identifies you as a current, paying pass member or day user. It indicates that you have paid for the privilege to use the equipment or participant in a class. Anyone who is not wearing the wrist band may be approached by staff and asked to return to the Information Desk. Please help keep your centers clean and properly dispose of tabs and used wrist bands.

What do I do if I don’t know how to use the equipment?

Let us help you get started on your exercise program by teaching you how to use the equipment. There is no fee for this service, pre-registration at the Customer Service Desk is required.

Youth (14-17 years) must complete an orientation before accessing the Fitness areas. A signed Parent/Guardian Consent Form must be returned the day of the orientation. Without the signed consent form, participation will not be allowed.
