Fitness Drop-in Class Descriptions
Aqua

These Aqua Fitness drop-in classes are water-based, low impact and joint-friendly. Open to both non-swimmer & swimmers. Equipment such as pool noodles and foam dumbbells may or may not be used.

Aqua Finning
Water based fitness for non-swimmers & swimmers. This calorie blasting workout using fins will tone the hip/thigh areas and includes abs/back training. You must be comfortable in deep water. Fins are provided.

Family Aqua Finning
The whole family can have fun in this Aqua Finning class designed for ages 8+. Youth between the age 8-12 years must be accompanied by a participating guardian who is 15 years or older. Participants must also be 112 cm tall to participate.           

Aqua Fit
A variety of intensity options are available for all fitness levels. Water equipment may or may not be used. Deep and shallow water options are provided.

Aqua Fit Bootcamp
Take your bootcamp class to the water.           

Aqua Fit Arthritic
This aqua class has a primary focus on exercises for those who have arthritis. Please check with your health professional before participating.

Aqua Fit Gentle
This class is for anyone who needs gentle exercises to increase range of motion, flexibility and muscle toning. An ideal class for post rehab participants who have been cleared to exercise by a physician or rehab professional.    

Cardio    

Have fun improving your heart health in aerobic-based Cardio drop-in classes. Stay motivated , build fitness and burn calories in one of these high energy classes.

Bounce Fit (Cardio)
A low-impact, calorie-burning workout using mini trampolines. Class focuses only on cardio fitness, no muscle.

Boxercise
An athletic, non-contact fitness workout. A typical class may include shadow boxing, skipping, kick boxing, press-ups, shuttle-runs and sit-ups.

Capoeira
A fusion of martial arts, dance and gymnastics. The class is accompanied by music, clapping and drums - the sound sets the tempo of the combat of deceptive kicks, sweeps and trips.

Cardio
A variety of class formats and equipment will keep you energized and motivated to build your fitness and burn calories.

Cardio Kickbox
Jab and kick your way into great shape in a fitness class inspired by martial arts. Class focuses on both cardio and muscle conditioning.

Cardio Rhythm
A fun, high-energy cardio toning class that provides a great workout with a variety of dance inspired styles. Previous experience not required, just a love of moving to music and a willingness to get fit!

Cycle
Indoor bikes with music. Special shoes not needed. Please bring a water bottle. Have fun with a variety of drills that feel like you are riding on flat roads, climbing and sprinting at various tempos. Space is limited; sign up is available 15 minutes before each class and due to popularity, only one signature per person.

Step
A classic work out emphasizing fun step patterns on an adjustable platform.

Step (Learn to)
If you have never tried step or find choreography challenging, come to this slower paced half hour class which brings step back to the basics.

Youth Bounce Fit
A low impact, totally fun workout using mini trampolines. Suitable for ages 10+. Parents welcome, but not required.

Zumba
Inspired by Latin and International dance, this is a great cardio fitness class with the focus on fun, calorie blasting workouts. This is not a step by step dance class.

Strength

Enjoy strengthening and toning your body in Strength drop-in classes that use a variety of exercises and equipment to target specific muscle groups:

Ab-Session
Develop strong abs and back using a variety of techniques and proper form.

Abs / Back / Balance
Tone & strengthen your core and improve balance using various types of equipment such as Stability Balls, Bosu, weights & bands.

Athletic Workout
Alternate between high & low intensity athletic drills for a fun and challenging combination class designed for the athlete in all of us.

Battle Rope Circuit
If your current workout could use a little something extra, consider a battle rope circuit workout. You’ll be fit to be tied- - in a good way! Improve your cardio, strength & endurance in this high energy class.

BLT:  Butt, Legs, Thighs
Blast your lower body with sculpting exercises that will strengthen and tone your butt, legs and thighs.

Body Sculpt
A total body work out using a variety of equipment to tone, improve muscle strength and endurance.

Bootcamp
Challenge yourself in a class that involves intervals of cardio drills, resistance training and calisthenics using your body weight such as push ups and squats.

Family Fitness
A fun circuit class for the whole family, designed for ages 8+. Youth between the age 8-12 years must be accompanied by a participating guardian aged 15 years or older.           

Pumped Up 
A group weight training class using a barbell and a variety of weighted plates. Class is similar to working out in a weight room. This class is offered exclusively at Allandale Rec Centre. Space is limited. Sign up is available 15 minutes before class; one signature per person.

Top Guns / Rock Bottom
A muscle conditioning class using a variety of equipment to tone, improve muscle tone in the upper and lower body.

TRX Boot Camp
This workout challenges your body through fun plyometric moves, body weight exercises and cardio drills that work your entire body using a variety of exercises and equipment combined with the TRX suspension system.

TRX Circuit
Challenge your workout with timed interval sets combining cardio drills and TRX body weight exercises.

TRX Express
Engage all your muscles with this non-stop 30 minute TRX circuit workout. Build overall strength, balance and flexibility with this total-body conditioning program. You set the intensity. All Core All The Time!

Upper Body Blast
Sculpting exercises will strengthen and tone your chest, shoulders, back, biceps and triceps.

Get a full body workout in Cardio & Strength Combo drop-in classes that include cardio, muscle, and stretching:

Bike & Body Bootcamp
Take your Bootcamp to the Bike.

Cycle class includes muscle conditioning off the bike

Cycle / TRX
Cycle class includes muscle conditioning using the TRX system.

Cycle / Yoga
Cycle class includes Yoga inspired stretching off the bike.

High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.T.T.)
A high intensity class of cardiovascular and muscle conditioning intervals. You can get long lasting fat-burning and heart-busting benefits from one great class.

Intervals
A great workout in this combo class that alternates between and cardio and muscle conditioning exercises using a variety of drills and equipment.

On the Ball
A combo class using the stability ball to improve cardio, muscle tone, flexibility, balance and posture.

Pumped up & Cardio
Add a variety of cardio styles followed by segments of the pumped up barbell class.

Step / Sculpt
Class includes abs and muscle toning exercises.

Step (Total Body)
Class includes muscle, abs and total body stretch.

Enjoy stretching and bending in Mind & Body drop-in classes that encourage flexibility body alignment and muscular balance:

Belly Fit 
Holistic fitness system for women with dance cardio moves inspired by belly dancing.

Pilates Fit
Focus your breath, strengthen your core and lengthen your body using controlled movements.

Piloga
Piloga is a mixture of Yoga fit and Pilates fit exercises that have been blended together so you can enjoy the best of both in one exhilarating class.

Stretch Out
Enjoy stretching and bending in classes that encourage flexibility, muscular balance and better posture.

Total Body Workout
Get the best of cardiovascular, muscle conditioning and a full body stretch in one great class. A variety of class formats and equipment are used.

Yoga Fit
Using a variety of stretching principles, breathing and relaxation techniques to reduce muscle tension and promote flexibility. Class may include the use of equipment such as yoga balls, stability balls or stretching bands.

Gentle

This Gentle fitness drop-in classes provide low impact, non jarring workouts to improve your stamina, strength, flexibility, and balance.

Aqua Fit Arthritic

General Information
General Fitness Centre Safety
  • Day lockers are provided, bring your own lock and secure your personal belongings. Locks can be rented for $5.
  • No coats, boots, gym bags or purses in the Fitness Centre.
  • Proper fitness attire must be worn including athletic shoes (no sandals or other footwear), clean athletic clothing
  • Practice good hygiene and avoid wearing heavy scents.
  •  Water only in a closed container. No food or glass containers.
  • Disinfected wipes are provided, please wipe down the equipment after each use.
Membership Pass Card and Wrist Band Policy

Your membership card is non-transferable. Swipe your membership card at each visit. A wrist band will be issued at the Customer Service Desk and must be worn on your wrist and visible to Fitness staff. Membership Card replacement Fee: $5.

Equipment Instruction

Instruction in the use of any City-owned fitness equipment must be provided by City Fitness Staff only. If you are unfamiliar with the use of the equipment, please ask staff for assistance before using it. Improper use can result in injury. Use the safety features on the equipment. Complimentary Smart Start Orientations are available to teach you how to use the equipment. Please register at the Customer Service Desk.

Technology Etiquette (Cell Phones and Other)

Fitness Centres and change rooms are shared areas. As a general courtesy and respect for others privacy, the use of electronic devices for the purpose of conversations, messaging and picture taking is not permitted. We appreciate your cooperation in helping to create an enjoyable environment for all and politely ask that you leave the area to address personal matters.

Fair Play for the Fun of It!

The goal of the City of Barrie facilities, programs and services is to ensure a rewarding, safe and positive experience for all users. Working in collaboration with Staff, as a participant you agree to treat others with respect, dignity and consideration during your visit. Abuse of any sort will not be tolerated. Disregarding the City of Barrie Fair Play Policy will result in being asked to leave the facility and possible pass suspension.

Facilities, Equipment and Programs

In order to maintain our equipment and facilities the City of Barrie reserves the right to close program and service areas for repair and refurbishment. Where possible, advance notice will be given. All equipment is available on a first come, first served basis. Classes and instructors are subject to change without notice. We are unable to provide refunds in these cases.

Group Fitness and Aqua Fitness Classes

The City offers over 130 Co-Ed Classes. Classes are 30-90 minutes in length with a variety of intensity options for all levels of experience. Always work at a pace that is suitable to your current fitness level and modify when necessary.

5 minutes before most classes an instructor is available to help you set up, give tips and answer questions about choosing an appropriate level. All equipment is available on a first come, first serve basis. Arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Certain classes have limited space due to equipment. Sign up is available 15 minutes before each class. You must be in the center to sign up. Due to popularity, only one signature per person.

Water filling stations are provided, please bring your own water bottle. You are encouraged to keep hydrated before, during and after your classes.

Cardio Equipment Procedures

Reservations sheets are posted. Sign up for a maximum of 2 time slots for a total of 30 minutes. Time is based on the wall clock, not the machine timer. Be respectful of others waiting – be on time and end on time.

Weight Equipment Procedures

Do not remove weight plates and dumbbells from designated areas. Return all equipment to the proper location after each use. Be respectful of others – allow others to share equipment between sets. Be respectful of others - loud grunting, banging and dropping weights are disruptive.

What's included in a Fitness Pass?

Anyone age 13+ are welcome to use the Fitness Centre. Pay as you go or purchase a value saving pass. A variety of Pass options are available. Easy Monthly Payment Plans are available for yearly memberships.

Your Fitness Pass gives you access to any of the following:

  • Free Weights and Machine Equipment
  • Cardio Equipment including treadmills, cross trainers, bikes
  • Unlimited Drop In Fitness, Cycling & Aqua Fitness Classes
  • Rec Swimming at 3 Pools
  • Drop in Gymnasium access at Holly and East Bayfield
  • New Smart Start Program : a free 60 min "just the basics" session with a Personal Trainer. Max. 5 people, pre-registration required.
  • Child Care (additonal fee, not included in membership)

    Enjoy your workout, knowing your child is in good hands. Safe, clean, reliable child care is available by your friendly first aid trained staff.
  • Personal Training (additonal fee, not included in membership)

    A Personal Trainer can empower you with the motivation and skills you need to boost your fitness routine results. Affordably priced; Fitness pass is not required.  
Can I give a pass as a gift?

Need the perfect gift for someone special? Your friends and family can use a City of Barrie gift card for memberships, personal training and other Recreation services. Cards are available in any amount you choose. Please talk to our staff at any of our recreation centres information desks or call 705-739-4223.

Can I bring my own Personal Trainer?

No. The City of Barrie’s Insurance only extends to those who are City of Barrie employees, who are fully trained on the proper use of the equipment provided in the Fitness Centers. Non-City of Barrie staff are prohibited from providing any kind of instruction on fitness equipment.

Can I cancel my fitness pass?

If you are still not satisfied please contact us at the numbers noted on this page. If you need to cancel your membership, you may do so at any time and receive a pro-rated refund (minus a $15 administration fee).  Please contact recinfo@barrie.ca or call the automated phone line at (705)739-4287.

What do I do if I don’t know how to use the equipment?

Let us help you get started on your exercise program by teaching you how to use the equipment. There is no fee for this service, pre-registration at the Customer Service Desk is required.



Youth (13-17 years) must complete an orientation before accessing the Fitness areas. A signed Parent/Guardian Consent Form must be returned the day of the orientation. Without the signed consent form, participation will not be allowed.
