The Opportunity:

​The Technical and Stormwater Operations Section is responsible for conducting compliance related inspections and investigations of all stormwater infrastructure including stormwater management facilities, Oil and Grit Separators, Low Impact Development, Creeks and ditches as well as associated water quality monitoring. Other duties include investigating complaints and responding to public concerns of related infrastructure, work order and records management for roads and drainage and assisting with the preparation for winter control, surface and rail operation activities.

The successful applicant will assist the City of Barrie in performing the following tasks: 
  1. Conducts annual inspections for City owned Stormwater Management Ponds, Watercourse and Ditches to ensure continued compliance with Systemwide Environmental Compliance Approval; 
  2. Inputs data and other information from the field into the CMMS Work Order management system 
  3. Conduct data collection, sampling and reporting for water quality monitoring and all records of stormwater management facilities, Oil and Grit Separators, Low Impact Development, Creeks and ditches remain in accordance with the Systemwide Environmental Compliance Approval;
  4. Compile and maintain records of all tests, inspections, and monitoring results; 
  5. Operate, maintain and calibrate sampling equipment; 
  6. Assist with investigations, analysis and evaluations for stormwater, roads, drainage infrastructure and winter control related programs and activities;
  7. Assist in winter material usage tracking and complete Environment Canada Winter Material Usage Report;
  8. Assist in winter equipment calibration and act as a field liaison for the Branch to actively communicate, monitor and inspect contractor’s work;
  9. Act as a field coordinator in the assigned roads and stormwater related contracts to coordinate with contractors to complete project deliverables.
  10. Engage in innovative operational practices and assisting in making continuous improvement to existing standing operating procedures, operations and maintenance manuals and activities. 
  11. Prepare reports and accurately document all other activities;  and
  12. Investigate and resolve complaints related to municipal services.  
Our Culture and Qualifications of the Job:
​Skills and Qualifications Required: 
  • Must be a full-time post-secondary student in an accredited institution, preferably in an Environmental Technology/Science or closely related program and is currently recognized as having full-time student status by the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled;  
  • Standard First Aid Certificate;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in field and water quality sampling; 
  • Basic knowledge of construction practices related to stormwater management and roads;
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings;
  • Dependable, reliable and work well with little supervision;
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal; 
  • Strong computer software skills (Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, ArcGIS); and
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) will be considered an asset. 
Conditions of Employment
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's Licence in good standing
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
Other Important Information:

Work Term: May – August 2021 (8 Months). The successful candidate must be willing and able to commence work on or about May 3, 2021.

Location: 165 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie, Ontario

Hours: 40 Hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., The successful candidate must be prepared to work additional hours as required.

Wage: $18.91 per hour
