The Opportunity:
The City of Barrie Wastewater Operations Branch operates 16 wastewater facilities, the largest being a 76MLD (megalitre/day) MECP Class IV Wastewater Treatment Facility (WwTF) and a Class III Wastewater Collection System. 

Reporting to the Wastewater Treatment, Maintenance, and Collections Forepersons, the Wastewater Operations and Maintenance Co-op Students are responsible for ensuring that Operations and Maintenance staff are well supported both at the WwTF and at remote sites.

These are frontline positions working directly alongside the team responsible for effective and efficient treatment of wastewater produced and collected in the City of Barrie.  Proper operation and maintenance of the WwTF, collection system, and all associated equipment and systems is vital to ensure compliance with all regulations, community health needs, and sound asset and risk management practices.

Major Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the Wastweater Treatment, Maintenance, and Collections Forepersons, Lead Hands and team members, the Wastewater Operations and Maintenance Co-op Students: 
  • Assist with monitoring, controlling, and optimizing of the sewage treatment process through visual inspection of process and equipment and by monitoring the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, both within the wastewater treatment facility and at remote stations.
  • Obtain regulatory and process control samples of various stages of the treatment process.
  • Operate valves, perform weekly alarm tests, and assist licensed operators during confined space entries.
  • Maintain records by entering data in computer and in written logs to meet legal requirements and to establish normal operation to aid in determining the overall effectiveness of processes.
  • Participate in the inspection and maintenance of buildings (e.g., hosing floors, replacing or repairing lighting, inspecting and signing off on fire extinguishers, inspecting floor grates, cleaning grit troughs).
  • In conjunction with the preventative maintenance program, ensure that required preventive maintenance (e.g., lubrication, oil change, disassembly, and cleaning of equipment) is done on equipment and assists in troubleshooting problems and subsequent repairs.
  • Assist Operations and Maintenance staff with special studies that may arise.  Assistance may include sample collection, data compilation and/or interpretation, and report or presentation preparation.
  • Conduct lab tests and analysis including nutrient concentration and evaluation (ammonia, total phosphorous), solids concentration (MLSS, MLVSS), pH, temperature, and microscopic examination of treatment microbiology.
  • Gather data via different methods (e.g., manually collected, flow charts, lab results, SCADA trends), and enters data into a usable format on computer.
Our Culture and Qualifications of the Job:
​Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled as a student in a post-secondary institution on a full-time basis, preferably in an Engineering or Environmental discipline
  • Valid Operator in Training license for Wastewater Treatment and/or Wastewater Collection or working towards
  • Standard First Aid Certification
  • Experience working in Water/Wastewater or Environmental facilities would be an asset
Knowledge, Skills, and Ability 
  • Demonstrated ability to exert physical effort to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects exceeding 10 kg regularly. 
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out the physical duties of the position which includes climbing stairs and ladders, walking over rough terrain. 
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with contacts in a courteous and efficient manner, promoting a high standard of public relations at all time.
  • Willingness to work in and around disagreeable elements including chemical, mechanical, and biological hazards.
  • Basic computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • General knowledge of laboratory and sampling techniques 
  • General knowledge of current environmental industry legislation, regulations and best practices including the following:
    • Occupational Health and Safety Act
    • Environmental Protection Act
    • Lake Simcoe Protection Act
    • Ontario Water Resources Act
Conditions of Employment:
  • ​Medical documentation to confirm medically fit to wear a respirator, if required
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License in good standing with ability to successfully pass the City of Barrie driving exam.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check

  • May - August 2021 (4 Months) - Up to 2 Vacancies
  • May - December 2021 (8 Months) - Up to 2 Vacancies
Location: Wastewater Treatment Facility, 249 Bradford Street, Barrie, Ontario

Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Wage: $18.91 per hour
