I, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie hereby proclaim
October 2, 2014 asTake Back the Night March- Day
WHEREAS; Take Back the Night is an internationally held march and rally intended as a protest and direct action against rape and other forms of violence against women; and
WHEREAS; Since the late 1970s, women have participated in the Take Back the Night march as a way of experiencing – for at least one night – the freedom of women walking together liberated from violence; and
WHEREAS; The event gives women the opportunity to walk the streets at night with their sisters and without fear; and it also celebrates women’s diversity, visibility and strength, emphasizing their right to demand a world in which they control their own minds, bodies and selves; and
WHEREAS; The City of Barrie continues to advocate for an end to violence against women and supports efforts to ensure women can live free from violence; and
WHEREAS; Take Back the Night, as recognized across the Province of Ontario, seeks to heighten awareness of the issue and works towards its end; and
THEREFORE, I, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie, do hereby proclaim October 2, 2014 as “Take Back the Night March” Day.
