I, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie hereby proclaim
May 3-9, 2021 asChildren’s Mental Health Week
WHEREAS; Approximately 1 in 5 children and youth in Canada has a diagnosable mental health disorder. If left untreated, these can lead to serious long-term consequences for children or youth and their families; and

WHEREAS; Early intervention and treatment for child and youth mental health challenges is critical. All children, youth and their families in need of mental health supports should be able to access services when and where they need them; and

WHEREAS; The pandemic has increased the need for mental health care. Calls to mental health crisis lines for children and youth have increased by 110% from 2019-2020; and

WHEREAS; Raising awareness about the importance of child and youth mental health ensures that families know about the availability of services and how to access them and reduces the stigma associated with seeking support; and

WHEREAS; The colour green is used to celebrate child and youth mental health as it represents hope, growth, and transformation.  On May 3, Meridian Square will be glowing green in recognition of this week.

THEREFORE,  I, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie, do hereby proclaim May 3 to May 9, 2021 as “Children’s Mental Health Week.”
