Proclamation

I, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie hereby proclaim
September 28, 2021 asBritish Home Child Day
WHEREAS;  In the years around 1900, more than 100,000 orphaned and abandoned children, who are known today as the “British Home Children”, were sent from the U.K. and placed in Canadian farms and households; the girls as domestic servants and the boys as labourers, and
 
WHEREAS; Many of these children, after being released from their indentures at the age of eighteen, contributed generously to the settlement of Barrie and area, and
 
WHEREAS; There are an estimated 4 million descendants of British Home Children living in Canada today, and
 
WHEREAS; On September 28th, our national British Home Child Day, landmarks across Canada will be illuminated in red, white and blue as “Beacons of Light”; tributes to British Home Children and Child Migrants; and sunflowers will be laid on the graves of Home Children
 
THEREFORE, I, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie, do hereby proclaim September 28, 2021 as “British Home Child Day.”
