I, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie hereby proclaim
November 16, 2021 asLouis Riel Day
WHEREAS;  Every year, on November 16, Métis people all across Ontario gather for Louis Riel Day events; and
WHEREAS; November 16, 1885, marks the sad day in Canada’s history when the Government of Canada executed Louis Riel for leading the Northwest Rebellion in defense of the Metis people; and
WHEREAS; Louis Riel is now considered to be one of Canada’s “Fathers of Confederation”; and
WHEREAS; Today, Riel is considered to be the founder of Manitoba and is recognized by the Métis and other people as an advocate for minority rights in Canada; and
WHEREAS; The Algonquin Woodlands Aboriginal Peoples Tribal Council encourages all Canadians to recognize a Métis and Canadian hero in Louis Riel on this day.
THEREFORE, I, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie, do hereby proclaim November 16, 2021 as “Louis Riel Day” and encourage residents to join in the remembrance and celebration of Louis Riel and promote equal rights for all minorities and citizens of Canada.
