I, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie hereby proclaim
November 23-1, 2021 asHIV/AIDS Testing/Awareness Week & World AIDS Day
WHEREAS; An estimated 680,000 people worldwide died of AIDS-related illnesses in 2020, an illness that is preventable and highly treatable with the use of anti-retroviral medication; and
WHEREAS; The number of Canadians living with HIV in 2018 was estimated to be 62,050, with 1 in 8 of those being undiagnosed despite the fact that testing is now more widely available as the result HIV home test kits and expanded access to rapid point of care testing. Know your status; and
WHEREAS; A person living with HIV who has access to effective treatment & care, and has a suppressed viral load has ZERO RISK of passing on HIV. Undetectable equals Untransmittable. U=U dismantles longstanding HIV stigma and is the foundation for being able to end the epidemic.
THEREFORE, I, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie, do hereby proclaim November 23 to December 1, 2021 as “HIV/AIDS Testing/Awareness Week & World AIDS Day” and encourage everyone to increase their awareness regarding the impact of HIV & AIDS and the need to work together to stop the spread of this disease and the stigma associated with it, locally and globally.
