I, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie hereby proclaim
April 1-30, 2022 asParkinson’s Awareness Month
WHEREAS; Parkinson Canada raises awareness about Parkinson disease in Canada, provides support programs and resources, funds critical research and advocates alongside people living with Parkinson’s; and
WHEREAS; Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological disorder in the world and Canada has the highest rate worldwide; and
WHEREAS;  More than 100,000 Canadians live with Parkinson’s, a number expected to increase substantially in the coming years, with 30 Canadians diagnosed each day; and

WHEREAS;  The average age of diagnosis is 60, but, there are also “young onset” diagnosed under the age of 40; and 

WHEREAS;  There is no test or cure for Parkinson’s. The most effective treatment for the disease was developed more than 50 years ago; and

WHEREAS;  Parkinson Canada guides the way for Canadians to live well with the disease through research, advocacy and support.  The Parkinson’s SuperWalk fundraiser held in September enables Parkinson Canada to deliver community services and fund research for treatment and, one day, a cure!
THEREFORE, I, Jeff Lehman, Mayor of the City of Barrie, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2022 to be “Parkinson’s Awareness Month” in the City of Barrie.
