PRESS RELEASEContest invites elementary school students to share their love for Barrie
Friday, February 12, 2021

(Barrie, ON) The City of Barrie's 2021 I Love Barrie contest launches today and runs until March 5. The City invites local elementary school students to tell us why Barrie is a wonderful place to live, grow and learn.

The I Love Barrie contest is an extension of the Ward 10 contest, which began in 2017, organized by Councillor Mike McCann.

Primary (Kindergarten to Grade 3) and Junior (Grades 4 to 6) students are invited to submit artwork or a photo. Intermediate (Grade 7 and 8) students can submit a short story up to 300 words. Entries will be judged on originality, positivity and expressiveness.

“I love Barrie. The people are our number one asset that make our city great," says Councillor McCann. “Every year, it's a highlight to read positive stories from Barrie's youth. These stories motivate me and others—the future of Barrie is in great hands!"

One winner will be chosen from each level: Primary, Junior and Intermediate and the prizes include:

  • an I Love Barrie prize pack
  • winners' names shared on barrie.ca and will be featured in the Barrie Advance (This Week in Barrie)
  • winners will have the opportunity to share their winning work on the KOOL FM and Rock 95 morning shows
  • winners will share their artwork, photo or read their essay at a Barrie City Council meeting in spring 2021

This contest is open to all elementary school students who attend an English or French public or private school in Barrie, or who live in Barrie and are home-schooled. Entries must be submitted by an individual, not a class.

Contest artwork, photos and short stories can be submitted online at barrie.ca/MyBarrie. Entries must be received by 4 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2021.
