Game On! 2021

The City of Barrie’s gaming event for all ages, where you can re-live the nostalgia of retro video games, go head-to-head in a video game tournament, learn about esports and game development, and much more!

This year, we went virtual from September 1–18 in partnership with the Barrie Public Library’s Comic Con. Game On! featured tons of fun activities for you and your family to safely enjoy. New content​, activies and scheduled programming were​ added throughout September 1 - 18.​​

Murder Mystery Escape Room at the Five Points Theatre​

Friday, September 3 @ 7pm (spots filled)
Saturday, September 4 @ 12pm (spots filled), 3pm (spots filled), 6pm (spots filled)

​This event takes two amazing games and slams them together: a murder mystery party and an escape room! Help Mr. Touloux figure out what is going on around the city. Gather your detectives and escape artists together to help solve the case. Groups can be up to 5 people, but a minimum of 4 people in a group is required to participate.​

The safety of participants is most important. COVID-19 safety procedures will be in effect, including mandatory masks, physical distancing, and maximum 20 participants per timeslot. In-person programming and safety requirements are subject to change and cancellation based on COVID-19 regulations.​

​Much Ado About Video Game Design

Are you interested in game design? Join us live on Zoom to learn a little bit about video game design, how it's done, and where it could take you in the future. Ask all your questions!

In partnership with the Barrie Public Library Comic Con, we are excited to be joined by Kids Great Minds to talk all about video game design.  Whether you're just starting out or considering game design as a possible career, Zoom in to meet a recent graduate in the field, learn something interesting, and ask your questions.​​

Kids Great Minds (KGM), is a dynamic and growing organization passionate and dedicated to teaching children digital technology. Their goal is to ignite a child's individual creativity, intellect and interest by providing a variety of computer based courses designed to introduce new concepts and develop core competencies in many of today's cutting edge technologies.

Game Developer Showcase: Archewood

2v2 Rocket League Tournament

Compete head-to-head in this friendly, all-ages virtual 2v2 Rocket League tournament hosted by We Got Game and streamed live on Twitch for all to watch starting at 1pm on Saturday, September 18.

It's free to enter and competitors are split into two age categories: Child 13 and under and Adult 14+. Register with a partner or on your own and We Got Game will match you up with someone in your age category with similar skill level.​

Prizes: the top two competitors in each age category will win an Amazon gift card! In the Adult category (14+), the prize value is $200 for 1st and $100 for 2nd. In the Child category (13 and under), the prize value is $100 for 1st and $50 for 2nd.

Rocket League is free to download and can be played on any system, including PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC. Visit the corresponding store on your system or visit on your PC.

Additional Programming: Videos & Activities

​From September 1–18, we shared a series of videos and activities, including:

  • Cosplay Talk with SnowHawk (Videos): Meet SnowH​​awk Cosplay​ and explore the world of cosplay! Joined by fellow cosplayers, find out how they got into the hobby of cosplay, what goes into the creation process, and enjoy some fun conversation about the fandom that surrounds cosplay.
  • Drawing Game Characters with The Drawing House (Video): Join Marshall from The Drawing House​ right here in Barrie to learn how to draw a few different popular game characters.
  • Esports for Parents Presented in partnership with BPL Comic Con​Do you ever wonder "what is esports?" or how you can support your child's interest in esports? Esports has gone from a niche community to a mainstream global billion-dollar industry. It often takes the form of organized, multi-player video game competitions between professional players and teams.

    Join Carol to learn about esports from a parent's perspective. Carol is a college professor and Barrie esports parent with two sons who have benefitted from their participation in esports, inlcuding one who played professionally. She is passionate about supporting esports in Simcoe County and can't wait to share her insight with other parents and anyone interested in learning more.

Red Meat Studios is a Canadian indie game development studio founded in 2013 and based out of Kitchener, ON and Halifax, NS. They create midcore and hardcore titles for PC, console, VR, and mobile and also have a casual and hypercasual division called Giggling Piglets. They've made it their mission to create innovative and fun games for their fans, so that they can thoroughly enjoy the time spent and be proud of their accomplishments.

  • Sentience: A free-to-play, multi-player stealth/social deduction game set in a sci-fi cyberpunk dystopian earth. Players can take on the role of a Sentinel to quell resistance or become a newly-sentient Rogue to complete tasks and take down the system. Sentience is currently available on Steam Early Access (free to play) and will be released on PC, Xbox and PlayStation later this year.
  • Cube Samurai Run Squared: The Cube Samurai is back in all-new endless runner! Eliminate the Conetrooper threat once and for all. Run, jump, slash, and slam your way across distant planets to become the hero our universe needs. A great game for kids, but the whole family can get in on the action with this fun running game available on Apple and Android.

Archewood​ is a ​new pixel MMORPG​ with a player base growing at rapid rates. ​Join forces with people around the world to conquer inside the hidden realms of Archewood. Choose between 4 classes, loot unique equipment and drops, fight your way through endless monsters, explore each new world as you level up, fight players to show off your skills, complete quests to uncover the lore, train unique skills for rewards, and join forces with friend or foe to complete raids and dungeons. ​Archewood is free to play and available on PC​.​

​Biba Playground App

Biba Playgrounds​ offer a new way to play! Select playgrounds around Barrie are equipped with Biba augmented reality tags that allow kids and parents to play together outdoors. The app offers different mini games, individual and co-op play where you are given tasks and challenges in the playground to complete the online game. Examples include catching butterflies to relay races. Biba Playground locations in Barrie:

​​Did you know that multiple playgrounds throughout Barrie have scavenger hunts available? Keep an eye out for tags of bugs and animals placed around the play equipment and see if you can find them all. Happy sleuthing!

  • The Northern Nerdcast - Starting out as a monthly newspaper to promote The Northern Gaming Expo, the creator soon went digital and started Fireside Chat, which is now known as The Northern Nerdcast. They have chatted with some amazing guests, including:
    • Katie O'Hagan - Chat about acting, the Resident Evil series, voice acting and more with the actor who played Mia Winters in both Resident Evil 7 Biohazard and Resident Evil Village.
    • Christophe Galati - Chat with the creator of the fantastic, entertaining and challenging game Save Me Mr. Tako who, at the age of 27, has a title being published by Limited Run Games. Learn about what the future looks like for this bright young entrepreneur as he talks about his current game, as well as future titles.
