Holiday activities that took place throughout the season

Island of Warmth* Interactive Light Display

The Island of Warmth display was removed on January 4, 2022.

Visit the interactive light display in downtown Barrie! An electrifying campfire made of 154 light bulbs that comes alive to music, visitors can generate the fire’s sounds and movements through sensors placed under the platform. The display reaches its peak when everyone around it moves in sync, turning it into a symphony for the eyes and ears!

*Photo credit Frederique Menard Aubin. The Island of Warmth was created and executed by Félix Dagenais and Louis-Xavier Gagnon-Lebrun (ATOMIC3), in collaboration with Jean-Sébastien Côté and Benjamin de Leener. The display is a coproduction of Partenariat du Quartier des spectacles Partnership and MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE.

New Year's Eve 2021 Schedule

The City’s NYE activities have been revised to ensure that they align with the latest Provincial regulations and the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) COVID-19 guidelines. The City continues to work with the SMDHU and is following all guidance provided.

If you're taking part in the City's family-friendly NYE events, remember to:
  • Wear a properly-fitting mask (that fully covers your nose, mouth and chin)
  • Keep distance from those outside your household
  • Stay home if you are sick
We also ask that residents watch the fireworks from their cars. Stay safe this New Year's Eve! Continue to follow health guidelines to keep our community safe: get vaccinated, keep your gatherings small, stay home when sick.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is there no Downtown Countdown this year?

COVID-19, and the timing of the announcement for lifting restrictions, prevented the City from hosting a traditional Downtown Countdown event. This year's event will focus on activating our downtown and community centres over the holiday season for a fun and exciting new experience.
