Barrie Winterfest

Winterfest 2020 Programming

On February1st and 2nd, 2020 join us as we celebrate the Winter season! Check out our programming schedule below and be sure to check back often as we'll be adding activities, performances and more in the coming months!

Outdoor Fun at Heritage Park & Meridian Place
Battle of the Chainsaws

Saturday, 1pm @ Meridian Place

Professional ice carvers from the IceCulture team go head-to-head in the ultimate ice carving battle.

General Activities

Ice Sculptures

Saturday 10am–10pm, Sunday 10am–4pm

Marvel at artistic masterpieces sculpted out of three hundred pound blocks of ice by the professional carvers from IceCulture. This year's theme is a celebration of stories. Check out our sculptures as they make books come alive!

Lumberjack Shows

Saturday & Sunday: 12pm, 1:30pm, & 3pm

Watch expert lumberjacks demonstrate their incredible skills - speed sawing, axe throwing, and chainsaw carving - at this perennial Winterfest favourite.

Maple Taffy

Saturday 10am–5pm, Sunday 10am–4pm

Try a sample of this traditional French-Canadian treat presented by Radio CFRH! Available while quantities last.​

Snow Sculptures

Winterfest features giant sculptures created out of snow by a professional carver. This year's theme is a celebration​ of stories. Check out our sculptures as they make books come alive!

Speaking of Wildlife

Saturday 10am–5pm, Sunday 10am–4pm
Shows at 12:30pm and 2pm daily

Get up close and learn about some of Canada's most popular furry friends! Stop by throughout the day or join them at 12:30pm and 2:00pm for special insights into the life of the wild.

Toronto Maple Leafs Fan Hub & Skating Rink

Walk through the Leafs Mobile Fan Zone and take a selfie in the replica Leafs locker room.  And make sure to dress for the weather and join them for even more fun on their synthetic skating rink! Reminder - you must bring your own helmet & skates!

Saturday @ 10am
Bring your own skates and helmet and join the Leafs Hockey Development Staff for a skate on the synthetic rink.

Saturday, 1pm to 2pm
Special NHL alumni appearance from Shayne Corson.

Historic Walking Tour with Barrie's Town Crier
Saturday & Sunday, 11am
 
Meet Barrie's Town Crier at the Meridian Place Stage for a 1 hour guided walking tour highlighting the city's history. He will entertain you with true stories of Barrie's Victorian past!
Winter Kites

Saturday & Sunday, 11am to 3pm (wind permitting)

The Toronto Kite Fliers will showcase kites of all sizes, shapes, and colours in a special winter aerial display.

Winter Yoga

Join us for a half-hour family yoga class set to live music presented by Anahata Yoga.

Mabel Moon

Join Mabel for an interactive sing-along show guaranteed to leave audiences laughing, smiling and feeling great!  With elements of clown, magic, music and interactive problem solving, this action-packed show has something for everyone - young and old.

​Experience the magic of the wandering Snowflake Princess, a hit with children of all ages, as she twirls her magic LED hoops and her beautiful gown lights up with LED twinkle lights.

Mariposa Skating Showcase & Learn to Skate

City Hall Outdoor Rink, 70 Collier Street
Saturday & Sunday, 12:15pm-1:30pm

Mariposa School of Skating presents a demonstration of their Beginner to International competitors. Bring your skates and join them on the rink after the show for a Learn to Skate session led by Mariposa’s Professional Coaches and Program Assistants. Mariposa runs Skate Canada’s Canskate program, which is the only nationally recognized learn to skate program in Canada and it teaches the fundamentals of skating. Mariposa’s coaching staff are among the best in the world and have produced Provincial, National, World, and Olympic Champions in figure skating as well as professional hockey players. Come learn to skate with the best!

The Barrie Lion's Club presents the 27th annual Winterfest pancake breakfast - a great start to your day and a Winterfest tradition! $7 for adults, $3 for children under 11, and preschoolers are free. Yummy!

Grey & Simcoe Foresters Regimental Museum

36 Mulcaster Street
Saturday 10am–4pm, Sunday 12pm–3pm

Bring the whole family, warm-up with a hot chocolate, and check out the exhibits in Barrie's only downtown museum. Listen to Sgt. Murray, dressed in full 1880s period uniform, as he relates the history of Barrie's own Militiamen and provides insight into Barrie's military heritage.

Giraffes Can't Dance Storytime

Books come Alive, with fun music to make you move, an interactive story and animal antics that will keep you all laughing and dancing.

African Zoo Adventure:

Geckos, lizards, snakes, and hedgehogs are live at the library! Come learn about the wild creatures of Africa with Zootek.

Hot Cocoa Trail Mug Rug

A quick little mug rug you can sew and bring along on the Hot Cocoa Trail at select downtown merchants and restaurants during the month of February.

Wild Africa Escape Room (TBA)

Each puzzle will take you to a country or region of Africa - the plains of the Serengeti, the jungles of Madagascar or the heat of the desert! This family-focused puzzle is challenging enough for adults but still fun for kids of all ages. Take 20 minutes to work together with your family and friends or have fun with the group and plan your escape together!

Space is limited, drop-in event, first come first served. Escape rooms are 20 minutes in duration with 10 participants per session. Sign-up sheet at the door.

Storytelling with Indigenous Artist Will Morin

Join us for storytime with Indigenous artist and performing Will Morin. Using props and asking for audience participation to enhance storytelling, Morin will relay traditional Anishinaabek Kinoomaagewin/Ojibway teachings. Free admission, no registration required.

Special NFB Screenings
Sunday, 1:10pm to 1:30pm
Join us for two animated films for families based on popular books for children. In I Want a Dog, a film by Sheldon Cohen, young May wants a dog more than anything but must stick to her motto, "If at first you don't succeed, try again," to convince her parents. In Robert Doucet's Blackberry Subway Jam, an adaptation of the Robert Munsch book, a young boy has a major problem: his apartment has become a subway station and his mother doesn't believe him. Free admission, register at the MacLaren reception desk from 12:30pm to 1:00pm.

Winterfest Family Workshop
Sunday, 1:30pm to 2:30pm
$5/child, free for MacLaren Members. Join us for creative winter fun led by a regional artist. Families will work collaboratively to create a series of artworks inspired by all things winter. $5/child, free for MacLaren Members - register at the MacLaren reception desk from 12:30pm to 1:00pm.

Simcoe Contemporary Dancers Performance
Sunday, 2:30pm to 3:30pm
Join Simcoe Contemporary Dancers and guests for a special performance incudling a special dance inspired by the exhibition Bertram Brooker: This Tremendous Arc, a new work by founder Sarah Lochhead. Free admission, no registration required.

Are you brave enough to take a frosty dip in Kempenfelt Bay? Come ready to take the plunge! No pre-registration required or fee to participate; however, you are welcome to fundraise for your charity of choice. Spectators welcome - a sight not to be missed!

Getting Around - Shuttle & Downtown Parking

Winterfest Park 'n Ride Shuttle
Saturday 9:30am to 5:00pm
Sunday 9:30am to 4:00pm

Park at the Bayfield Mall, easily accessed off of Highway 400, and take a warm and comfortable FREE ride to Barrie Winterfest! The shuttle will pick-up and drop-off at Coulter Street behind the Bayfield Mall at Barrie Transit stop #203 and the Downtown Transit Terminal along Maple Avenue where you can cross the street to Heritage Park and enjoy all of the festivities.

Parking

If you're driving to the event, there's plenty of downtown and waterfront parking available within close walking distance, including the Collier Street Parkade. It is a fully accessible, 7-level parking facility with over 300 parking spots located on Collier Street between Owen and Clapperton Streets, just a short walk from Heritage Park & Meridian Place.

Road Closures

When making your way around downtown, Simcoe Street will be closed from Maple Avenue to Dunlop Street from 6:00am February 1 to 6:00pm February 2.
