Building Permit Record Searches

Building permit records consist of drawings and other related documents. The City of Barrie retains building permit records as per the City’s Records Retention Program Policy.

How to conduct a building records search

Building Permit Records can be requested for viewing and copying; however, it is not guaranteed that all records are available. For security reasons, the building and architectural plans for specific types of buildings (i.e. city facilities, banks, religious buildings, etc.) will not be made available.


To conduct a building records search, you must submit:

  • Building Services Document Request Form
  • Proof of Ownership (driver’s licence, health card, passport, or photo id showing address) OR a signed Owner Consent Form / Letter from the Property Owner
  • Retrieval Service Fee Payment as per the City of Barrie Fees By-law
  • All above items, in person to: City of Barrie, Service Barrie, 1st Floor, 70 Collier Street, Barrie, ON, L4M 4T5, Mon-Fri-, 8:30am – 4:30pm. The Copyright Act All terms and conditions of the Copyright Act apply to the use of record(s).

Search process

The following are key items you will need to know regarding the process:

  • The results of the search do not impact the cost of the search; the retrieval fee is non-refundable (even if no records are produced). 
  • The search for archived records can take up to a week. Upon retrieval, the Building Services department will contact the Requester advising that the records are ready for viewing at City Hall.
  • If you wish to make copies of the record(s), a copying fee will apply. Large drawings will be sent off-site for duplication at an extra cost.
  • ​There may be specific records that are required to be requested under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. If this process is required, Building Services will notify you to complete the FOI Request Form

Can building records be emailed to me?

Building records are provided in person only. You will receive your requested records in hard copy format or digitally via USB.

Can building services staff assist me while I’m viewing drawings and building permit records?

Building Services Staff cannot provide any consultation or interpretation of the documents being viewed.

What building permit records can I view or request copies of?

Building drawings, lot gradings, final inspection reports, occupancy reports, and occupant load reports.
