Barrie Fire and Emergency Service 175th Anniversary

In 2019, the City of Barrie is celebrating 175 years of Barrie Fire and Emergency Service (BFES). Originally organized in 1844, Barrie Fire and Emergency Service provides high-level service in: fire inspection/code enforcement, fire protection, technical rescue, training, communications, origin and cause investigations and emergency management planning.

Share Your Story

To help commemorate Barrie Fire and Emergency Service’s 175th anniversary, BFES asked members of the public to share stories of how they have been helped by Barrie Fire over the years. Thank you to everyone who took the time to submit. We are
honoured to share your stories. Stories from Our Community 1844 - 2019.

Historical Fires Walking Tour (self-guided)

Tour the locations of 14 fires that shaped Barrie between 1873 and 2007 with this online story map. The map guides you to the location of each fire and includes stories and photos about each event.

Events and Celebrations

Barrie will host a series of events and celebrations throughout the year to recognize this milestone, including:

Hot Summer Nights

Barrie Fire’s mini-combat challenge will take a step back in time so kids can experience what it was like to fight fires many years ago. Participants will get the opportunity to respond to a ‘fire’ on horseback, try on an old style trench coat and be part of a bucket brigade.

Fire Prevention Week

It's going historical with a walking tour of fires that have taken place over the years in downtown Barrie, and our traditional Domino's Pizza partnership, plus the Home Depot day side by side burn featuring a legacy vs modern furntiure room burn.
