​Waste Reduction Week

City of Barrie Environmental Services and the Barrie Public Library will be hosting a number of activities taking place October 21-27, 2019 and will highlight The Recycling Council of Ontario educational themes. 

Municipal governments have an important role to play in promoting waste reduction, reuse, recycling, composting and other conservation measures. Communities, businesses and organizations across Canada have committed to working together to raise awareness of these issues during Waste Reduction Week in Canada.

In addition the events below at the Barrie Public Library, Environmental Services staff will be at Bear Creek Secondary School on October 22 to talk about the Problem with Plastics. Other local schools will be doing Landfill field trip visits during Waste Reduction Week as well.

​Downtown Barrie Public Library​Kick-off​Visit the City of Barrie display and learn some tips to recycle right and making the most of the green bin program. Pick up a waste sorting sticker as a reminder on what is accepted in the City's curbside collection program.
​October 21​Downtown Barrie Public Library​Kick-off​Celebrate Public Library Week & Waste Reduction Week. A Library card helps promote a sharing economy. Visit and borrow something today...instruments, fishing roads and bike locks too!
October 22​Downtown Barrie Public Library​Textiles​Search the Information Barrie Community Information Database to find service providers in Barrie that will recycle, reuse your goods and that offer community gardening to help reduce food waste.

Create your own kitchen scrubbie out of repurposed produce bags.​

Get hands on instruction on how to make a reusable bag out of t-shirts. You can also check out how you can repurposed old clothes with the Collaboratory's sewing machines!

​Find out how putting the wrong thing in the wrong container affects waste diversion and what residents can do to help. Shinhee Kim, a student from Georgian College's Analytics program, will talk about food waste and how to reduce our footprint. 
October 24​Downtown Barrie Public Library - library book display​Plastics & packaging​Learn how to replace single use plastics such as shopping and produce bags, plastic straws and water bottles. Reusable metal straws will be handed out to residents.

Hey, food isn’t garbage! Learn what you can so that food waste doesn’t end up in the landfill taking up valuable space. 
October 26​Downtown Barrie Public Library​Swap, share, repair​Toss it? No way! Do you have a broken item at home that needs a repair? Bring it to the Library’s Repair Café on Nov. 9​. This event is free, and visitors are invited to bring one item per visit. ​
