Georgian College U-Pass

Effective September 2018, all full-time credit Georgian College students receive a transit pass. The per-semester cost is added to student fees.

About Georgian College U-Pass

Like many Canadian colleges and universities, Georgian College’s enrolment is increasing and there is greater car ownership among its students—which puts pressure on campus roads, parking lots and transit services. A universal transit pass is an increasingly popular solution, providing unlimited access to public transit for every eligible full-time student each semester.

The U-Pass is expected to increase Barrie Transit ridership, reduce illegal parking and decrease student housing rental near Georgian College, by allowing more students to find housing outside of the college’s immediate area and take the bus to class.

The U-Pass costs $87.85 per semester (added to student fees). A student bus pass would cost $270 per semester.

A referendum was held from January 8 to January 24, 2018 to provide Georgian College students the opportunity to vote whether or not to implement a Universal Bus Pass (U-Pass). All students who were enrolled in full-time programs at Georgian’s Barrie Campus were eligible to vote. Students successfully voted in favour of the program.

On April 30, 2018, City Council approved implementing a Universal Transit Pass (U-Pass) for Georgian College. The U-Pass agreement between the City and Georgian College will be a 3-year term, with an option for a 2-year renewal. The U-Pass program will launch at the beginning of the fall 2018 semester. It’s estimated that nearly 16,500 students are eligible for the fall, winter and summer semesters at Georgian College.
