Big Bay Point Road
Transportation Improvements

Bayview Drive to Huronia Road

The City of Barrie Multi-Modal Active Transportation Master Plan (MMATMP) identified Big Bay Point Road as key transportation corridor and recommended several transportation improvements to accommodate growth in Barrie to 2031.

Project Updates

June 2021

The City's Infrastructure Department has completed the design for the widening and reconstruction of Big Bay Point Road from east of Bayview Drive to Huronia Drive. The City has started the public tendering process to hire a contractor to perform the work. The City expects to have a contractor hired in August 2021. Utility relocations have started and will continue until spring 2022.

To facilitate the construction of the new road, occasional lane closures will be in place. Residents can expect delays in traffic movements from 9am to 3pm periodically throughout the construction season. Detour options will be put in place to provide residents an option to avoid delays.

Full closures at the intersection of Big Bay Point Road and Huronia Road, and Big Bay Point Road and Welham Road can also be expected occasionally throughout the construction season. These closures will be limited to weekends, and residents and motorists will be provided with advanced notice using construction information signs. Detour options will be put in place to provide motorists alternative routes around the closures.

Project Features

The Big Bay Point Road intersection at Bayview Drive is part of the Harvie Road/Highway 400 Crossing construction project. The improvements to Big Bay Point Road will continue east to Huronia Road.

The designed improvements include:

  • Continuous 4.2 m two-way left turn lane;
  • 1.5 m bicycle lanes with 0.5 m buffer on both sides of the roadway;
  • Variable boulevard widths;
