Big Bay Point Road
Transportation Improvements

Bayview Drive to Huronia Road

The City of Barrie Multi-Modal Active Transportation Master Plan identified Big Bay Point Road as a key transportation corridor and recommended several transportation improvements to accommodate growth in Barrie to 2031.

Project Updates

April 28, 2022

The closure of Welham Road has been extended until May 3, 2022. The Huronia Road closure will commence on May 16.

Occasional lane closures controlled by trained traffic control persons continue. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously through the construction zone and take the optional detours in place to avoid potential delays.

During the below closures, no traffic is permitted to turn from Big Bay Point Road to travel southbound onto Huronia Road or Welham Road (whichever is closed), and only local traffic is permitted on a portion of the affected road. Access to all businesses remains open, and implemented detours are signed.

Previous Updates

March 24, 2022

The contractor has resumed operations on site. Construction is currently focused on the south side of the road, with a shift to the north side expected at the beginning of the summer. Traffic will be temporarily shifted to the north but two lanes of traffic will remain through the work zone.

Occasional lane closures controlled by trained traffic control persons can be expected. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously through the construction zone and take the optional detours in place to avoid potential delays.

To facilitate construction, the contractor will be fully closing the south legs of the intersections at Huronia Road and Welham Road this spring. Only one road (Huronia or Welham) will be fully closed at a time. During these closures, all traffic will not be permitted to turn from Big Bay Point Road to travel southbound onto Huronia Road or Welham Road (whichever is closed), and only local traffic will be permitted on a portion of the affected road. Access to all businesses will remain open, and detours will be put in place and signed.

Traffic Impacts

To facilitate the construction of the new road, occasional lane closures will be in place. Residents can expect delays in traffic movements from 9am to 3pm periodically throughout the construction season. Detour options will be put in place to provide residents an option to avoid the delays.

The Contractor has constructed a temporary widening along Big Bay Point Road to allow traffic two lanes through the construction zone. Traffic between Bayview Dr and Huronia Rd is shifted to the north around the construction activities.

To facilitate construction, the Contractor will be closing the south legs of the intersections at Huronia and Welham this Spring.  During these closures, traffic will not be permitted to turn between Big Bay Point and Ellis for a period of two weeks.  Access to all businesses will remain open and only one road (Huronia or Welham) will be closed at a time.  Detours around the closure will be put in place and signed.  Exact dates of these closures are still to be confirmed.  A minimum of two weeks advanced notice will be provided.  Please monitor the City's Road Closure App and website for updates.  Similar closures of the north legs of the intersections are also expected later this Summer.
