Highway 400 Crossing
Watermain Relocation

Relocation of the existing watermain located approximately 1.1 km south of Essa Road.

The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario will be commencing construction of a new interchange at Essa Road and Highway 400. There is an existing watermain that is currently in conflict with the proprosed design and requires relocation.

Project Updates

August 26, 2021

The City of Barrie Infrastructure Department has completed the design and tendering for Highway 400 Crossing watermain relocation. Ward& Burke Microtunnelling Ltd. has been hired by the City to complete the work and construction is underway, with an expected completion of November 2021.

The project work zone is outside the City of Barrie right-of-way so residents and motorists should expect little interruptions from this construction. Occasional lane closures will be in place along Fairview Road, which will be controlled by traffic control persons to ensure safe movement of vehicles around the closure. Minor delays may be experienced.

Project Features

The works will include:

  • Installation of a new 300 mm watermain under Highway 400
  • Connection of the new watermain to the existing watermain
  • Abandonment of the existing watermain

Traffic Impacts

Access to the work zone will be from the Bryne Drive cul-de-sac and from a temporary entrance at Fairview Road.  Residents should see no traffic impact on Bryne Drive; however occasional short term lane closures will be in place along Fairview Road to facilitate access. Residents and motorists can expect delays in traffic movement periodically throughout the construction season. Any traffic restrictions will be controlled by trained traffic control persons.

The Contractor is required to conduct work in a safe manner, including fencing of deep excavations and protection of the work zone. Access to the work zone will be from Fairview Road and is restricted to authorized workers only. We ask that you take extra caution during the construction period to ensure everyone’s safety.
