Design Project

Dunlop Street East Improvements

The City is proposing streetscape improvements on Dunlop Street, from Mulcaster to Toronto, as previously recommended through the Dunlop Street Corridor Improvements Class Environmental Assessment (December 2, 2015).

These improvements will create a flexible street environment that will better accommodate pedestrians of all abilities, allow downtown merchants to better utilize the boulevard for outdoor retail and patios, and to facilitate the use of the street for major cultural and tourism based events on a temporary basis.

Open House / Public Information Centre

To present the proposed Dunlop Street improvements and seek community feedback, a Public Information Centre (PIC) was held April 19, 2018.  The material presented is listed below.  Comments can be faxed to 705-739-4247 or emailed  to

Project Features

The proposed design will:

  • include a pedestrian friendly, enhanced streetscape, that will ensure accessibility for all users;
  • facilitate a patio program providing operational flexibility and ease of implementation on a seasonal basis;
  • renew existing infrastructure (sanitary and storm sewers, watermain and utilities) as deemed necessary;
  • introduce green infrastructure throughout the corridor to assist in the removal of road pollutants from stormwater run-off while providing fertile environments for the long-term health of street trees;
  • modernize the approach to street parking through the replacement of parking meters with centralized ‘pay-and-display’ stations;
  • support Memorial Square & Meridian Place as a key downtown public space through compatible aesthetics and function;
  • provide other amenities (planters, enhanced lighting, trash/recycling receptacles, benches, bike racks) to enhance the public environment.
