McKay Road West Improvements
Highway 400 to Reid Drive
This transportation improvement project will support growth and development along McKay Rd in south-west Barrie. The project extends from
east of Veteran’s Dr to the west of the future extension of Reid Dr.
This project is the first phase of McKay Road infrastructure improvements to support development in the
Salem Secondary Plan Area. The project is currently in the Detailed Design stage and will conform with the City’s Transportation
Master Plan.

- Design Status: 60% Detailed Design Stage completed, working towards 90% Design Stage

Project Features
The improvements will include roadway expansion to five lanes, roadway reconstruction, new concrete sidewalks, a multi-use trail, and local stormwater management improvements. The design concept includes:
- Stormwater management solutions which include a combination of traditional and modern stormwater management features such as low-impact development structures
- Roadway design elements from the Transportation Master Plan include:
- Four traffic lanes and a centre median/turning lane
- Intersection Improvements at McKay Rd/Veteran’s Dr, including new traffic signals and auxiliary turning lanes
- Active transportation infrastructure including cycle tracks and sidewalks
- Streetscape improvements including streetlighting and landscaping
