New Foundations Initiative: Council Motion
New Foundations offers select property owners the chance to apply to undertake a feasibility study, with the aim of creating more affordable housing options in Barrie.
On October 4, 2021, City Council adopted two by-law amendments to Zoning By-law 2009-141 to facilitate more and better affordable housing options. See Zoning By-law Updates for Affordable Housing for details. The City's Affordable Housing Strategy aims to encourage, stimulate and increase the supply and range of affordable housing.
New Foundations is a City of Barrie initiative that offers select property owners the chance to apply for support to undertake an affordable housing feasibility study.
Each feasibility study:
Through New Foundations, the City will be funding up to 10 affordable housing feasibility studies.
On October 4, 2021, City Council adopted an
amendment to Zoning By-law 2009-141, which makes it possible to now build affordable housing within Institutional zones – areas of Barrie that include places of worship, community centres, assisted living facilities and other similar types of properties.
Barrie City Council put forward a motion to fund affordable housing feasibility studies for properties zoned institutional, as well as for certain places of worship outside of institutional zones.
Many of these sites are large and have the space to build affordable townhomes or small- or mid-sized apartments in conjunction with the existing permitted use. This initiative is just one way in which the City is committed to working with partners to bring more affordable housing to Barrie.
Online applications were accepted in February 2022.
There are many ways to work together with the City of Barrie and its partners to help make more affordable housing available in Barrie. If you are a property owner, you may consider providing an additional residential unit on your property.
