Fitness Drop-in Classes

The City of Barrie offer fitness classes suitable for all levels of experience.  Find your favourite or try them all.  There are a variety to choose from including:

  • Cardio, Muscle and Combination Classes
  • Yoga, Pilates and Stretching
  • Bootcamps, Athletic Workout
  • Cycling, exercise ball, barbell classes
  • Aqua Fit for both swimmers and non-swimmers (shallow & deep water)

Personal Training & Small Group Training

City of Barrie Personal Trainers are certified and can help you reach your personal goals quickly and effectively.  Learn correct exercise form and proper techniques to get the results you want.  There are no long term contracts and sessions are purchased by the hour.

The options available are:

1:1 Private Training

2:1 Partner Training
Two people share the expertise of a trainer during their workout.  Working out with a friend, co-worker or loved one is a great way to have fun and increase motivation.

Small Group Training (3-5 people)
A group of 3-5 people with similar goals can motivate you to achieve your personal best.  There are no make up sessions.

Team Training (Max. 20 people)
Sport specific, age and stage appropriate training is provided by experienced trainers.  There are no make up sessions.

General Information
General Fitness Centre Safety
  • Day lockers are provided, bring your own lock and secure your personal belongings. 
  • No coats, boots, gym bags or purses in the Fitness Centre.
  • Proper fitness attire must be worn including athletic shoes (no sandals or other footwear), clean athletic clothing
  • Practice good hygiene and avoid wearing heavy scents.
  •  Water only in a closed container. No food or glass containers.
  • Disinfected wipes are provided, please wipe down the equipment after each use.
Membership Pass Card

Your membership card is non-transferable. Swipe your membership card at each visit. Membership Card replacement Fee: $5.

Equipment Instruction

Instruction in the use of any City-owned fitness equipment must be provided by City Fitness Staff only. If you are unfamiliar with the use of the equipment, please ask staff for assistance before using it. Improper use can result in injury. Use the safety features on the equipment. Complimentary Smart Start Orientations are available to teach you how to use the equipment. Please register at the Customer Service Desk.

Technology Etiquette (Cell Phones and Other)

Fitness Centres and change rooms are shared areas. As a general courtesy and respect for others privacy, the use of electronic devices for the purpose of conversations, messaging and picture taking is not permitted. We appreciate your cooperation in helping to create an enjoyable environment for all and politely ask that you leave the area to address personal matters.

Fair Play for the Fun of It!

The goal of the City of Barrie facilities, programs and services is to ensure a rewarding, safe and positive experience for all users. Working in collaboration with Staff, as a participant you agree to treat others with respect, dignity and consideration during your visit. Abuse of any sort will not be tolerated. Disregarding the City of Barrie Fair Play Policy will result in being asked to leave the facility and possible pass suspension.

Facilities, Equipment and Programs

In order to maintain our equipment and facilities the City of Barrie reserves the right to close program and service areas for repair and refurbishment. Where possible, advance notice will be given. All equipment is available on a first come, first served basis. Classes and instructors are subject to change without notice. We are unable to provide refunds in these cases.

Group Fitness and Aqua Fitness Classes

The City offers over 130 Co-Ed Classes. Classes are 30-90 minutes in length with a variety of intensity options for all levels of experience. Always work at a pace that is suitable to your current fitness level and modify when necessary.

5 minutes before most classes an instructor is available to help you set up, give tips and answer questions about choosing an appropriate level. All equipment is available on a first come, first serve basis. Arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Certain classes have limited space due to equipment. Sign up is available 15 minutes before each class. You must be in the center to sign up. Due to popularity, only one signature per person.

Water filling stations are provided, please bring your own water bottle. You are encouraged to keep hydrated before, during and after your classes.

Cardio Equipment Procedures

Reservations sheets are posted. Sign up for a maximum of 2 time slots for a total of 30 minutes. Time is based on the wall clock, not the machine timer. Be respectful of others waiting – be on time and end on time.

Weight Equipment Procedures

Do not remove weight plates and dumbbells from designated areas. Return all equipment to the proper location after each use. Be respectful of others – allow others to share equipment between sets. Be respectful of others - loud grunting, banging and dropping weights are disruptive.

What's included in a Fitness Pass?

Anyone age 13+ are welcome to use the Fitness Centre. Pay as you go or purchase a value saving pass. A variety of Pass options are available. Easy Monthly Payment Plans are available for yearly memberships.

Your Fitness Pass gives you access to any of the following:

  • Free Weights and Machine Equipment
  • Cardio Equipment including treadmills, cross trainers, bikes
  • Unlimited Drop In Fitness, Cycling & Aqua Fitness Classes
  • Rec Swimming at 3 Pools
  • Drop in Gymnasium access at Holly and East Bayfield
  • New Smart Start Program : a free 60 min "just the basics" session with a Personal Trainer. Max. 5 people, pre-registration required.
  • Child Care (additional fee, not included in membership)

    Enjoy your workout, knowing your child is in good hands. Safe, clean, reliable child care is available by your friendly first aid trained staff.
  • Personal Training (additional fee, not included in membership)

    A Personal Trainer can empower you with the motivation and skills you need to boost your fitness routine results. Affordably priced; Fitness pass is not required.  
Can I give a pass as a gift?

Need the perfect gift for someone special? Your friends and family can use a City of Barrie gift card for memberships, personal training and other Recreation services. Cards are available in any amount you choose. Please talk to our staff at any of our recreation centres information desks or call 705-739-4223.

Can I bring my own Personal Trainer?

No. The City of Barrie’s Insurance only extends to those who are City of Barrie employees, who are fully trained on the proper use of the equipment provided in the Fitness Centers. Non-City of Barrie staff are prohibited from providing any kind of instruction on fitness equipment.

Can I cancel my fitness pass?

Please be advised that membership cancellations are prorated, meaning you will pay for the portion of the month in advance of the cancellation.  Cancellations are processed the business day prior to the next scheduled payment due with no administration fee or refund. Requests must be received at recreation.information@barrie.ca or by calling 705.739.4287 at least  7 business days prior to the first of the month to avoid your next scheduled payment. Processing of cancellations will be the business day prior to the first of the month.

What do I do if I don’t know how to use the equipment?

Let us help you get started on your exercise program by teaching you how to use the equipment. There is no fee for this service, pre-registration at the Customer Service Desk is required.

Youth (13-17 years) must complete an orientation before accessing the Fitness areas. A signed Parent/Guardian Consent Form must be returned the day of the orientation. Without the signed consent form, participation will not be allowed.
