Royal Oak Drive Urbanization / Gable’s Park Part 2
Sanitary / Water Servicing and Urbanization. The City of Barrie awarded Contract 2017-001T to John Bravakis Enterprises Ltd.
The City of Barrie is committed to working with other government agencies to restore and improve the health of Lake Simcoe and its watershed. Adding sanitary services to areas that currently have private septic systems and treating the wastewater ensures it meets Ministry of Environment and Climate Change standards before releasing the wastewater to Lake Simcoe. Generally, the private septic systems in this neighbourhood have reached the end of their life cycle.
The City of Barrie is committed to service areas with potable water that currently do not have access to municipally operated and monitored water service. In the Royal Oak Subdivision, the roadway infrastructure has reached the end of its life cycle and needs to be replaced, and, where possible, improved to meet current city standards.
The work includes:
- Installation of a 250 mm diameter sanitary sewer including maintenance holes and sanitary sewer laterals on Tollendal Mill Road (near Royal Oak Drive), Royal Oak Drive, Lovers Court, Forestwood Lane, Bay Lane (near Cottage Lane), and Gable’s Park.
- Installation of storm sewer, catch basins and ditch inlet catch basins on Royal Oak Drive, Forestwood Lane and Lovers Court.
- Installation of watermain including water services on Royal Oak Drive, Lovers Court, Forestwood Lane, Tollendal Mill Road (near Royal Oak Drive), Bay Lane (near Cottage Lane), and Gable’s Park.
- Removal and replacement of existing asphalt & granulars for the full width of the road.
- Installation of concrete curb, concrete sidewalks and streetlights.
Underground work and base asphalt within the Royal Oak Subdivision is now substantially complete, and sidewalks, boulevard restoration and surface course asphalt will be placed in 2018. The work from Gable’s Park across Bay Lane to Brennan Avenue is anticipated to be complete in 2018.
Urban Forestry Impacts
An inventory of the trees was completed, and includes trees within the road right-of-way and trees with canopies reaching into the right-of-way. The inventory documents the species, size and health of the trees. A number of trees have been removed because they are dead or in bad health. Other trees are being pruned to provide proper clearances within the road right-of-way for maintenance activities and snow removal equipment.
The construction includes tree protection fencing to help the contractor keep from damaging trees while maneuvering equipment within the rights-of-way.
Trees within the rights-of-way that are in poor condition or dead have been removed. Other trees may have branches pruned to permit the contractor to do the construction work without otherwise damaging the tree limbs.
In Gables Park, a planting restoration plan is prepared to stabilize the topsoil within the sanitary sewer and watermain corridor. Trees will not be planted as part of the restoration plan to help keep the corridor open in case repairs need to be made to either the watermain or sanitary sewer in future years.
The work will be undertaken maintaining a minimum of one lane of through traffic at most times and pedestrian access through the construction area. The work will have minimal impact on school bus service that currently services the neighbourhood.
Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
Curbside collection will not be affected. On the normal curbside collection day, place all garbage, organics, recyclables and yard waste materials at the front of your property as usual. The construction contractor will remove these items and take them to outside of the construction zone, for pickup by the City’s waste pickup contractor.Your garbage cans, organics bin and recycling boxes will be returned to your property later that day. Please mark your address on all of your containers. It is very important that you take your refuse and recyclable items to the front of your property by 7am. otherwise these items might not be picked up!
Access to Properties
Where possible and practical, access to driveways will be maintained with vehicular access to properties and businesses at most times during the construction period. On occasion, however, direct access to driveways may be interrupted. The Contractor must give prior notice of any imminent access restrictions. This interruption is to allow for installation of sewers, sidewalks, and driveway restoration. Access will be restored as quickly as possible after the work is completed. Pedestrian access to all properties will be maintained during construction.
