Curbside Giveaway Days (previously New to Me Day) take place twice per year in Barrie, in the spring and in the fall. They are a chance for residents to get rid of used items that others might like.
It's like a garage sale, but without the money or hassle. Everything you place at the end of your driveway or lawn on the specified day is free for others to pick up. Clearly label items you wish to give away as “FREE” and place them at the curb. Items can be placed at the curb starting at 8am. You can also share the items you have available by posting on the City's Facebook event for Curbside Giveaway Day, to show others what you're offering.
Apart from finding things for free, you also benefit by cleaning your home of unwanted items, while helping prolong the life of Barrie’s landfill. This helps support a circular economy, which is a movement toward greener, more sustainable options, by considering using items in new ways so they can be reused, and sharing things instead of throwing them out.
Anything that does not find a new home must be taken back in by 9pm the same day, as there will be no special municipal collection. If you need to get rid of items, refer to Alternative Waste Disposal Options or visit barrie.ca/landfill for information on how to properly do so.
Please note: Residents in the BIA area of downtown Barrie are not able to participate in Curbside Giveaway Day since placing items on the sidewalk could be a hazard to pedestrians. In addition to the landfill (which accepts electronics, tires, clothing or other textiles free of charge), alternative waste disposal options include textile collection bins at select city facilities and local charitable reuse stores and pickup services.
