Barrie area ranks lowest in Canada for violent crimes

In addition to being ranked the safest city in Canada, Barrie has also recently been recognized as being the country’s lowest on the Violent Crime Severity Index, according to a Statistics Canada report.

This is the third year in a row that the Barrie area has ranked the lowest on the violent crime scale and Barrie remains low on the overall Crime Severity Index (CSI), which measures both volume and severity of crimes.

“This exceptional achievement is a testament to the outstanding partnership we maintain with Barrie Police, and Council's unwavering commitment to community safety, as outlined as a key priority in our Strategic Plan,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “Challenges will still arise, but we are committed to working together to create a safe and welcoming city for all residents.”

Overall, police-reported crime in Canada increased in 2022 by 4 per cent, and the violent CSI also rose last year. Canada’s non-violent CSI also increased in 2022 but remained lower than before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
