Barrie moves to Red COVID-19 level of restriction

As declared by the Province, and on the advice of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU), municipalities in the Simcoe Muskoka area including the City of Barrie will move from the Orange-Restrict level to the Red-Control level of COVID-19 restrictions, effective at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, December 14, 2020. 

The Red level means broader-scale measures and restrictions across multiple sectors to control transmission of the virus. Restrictions are the most severe available before widescale business or organizational closure.

What does this mean for residents? The following limitation framework is in place as part of the Red-Control level in Barrie. Please note the following is subject to additional input or further restrictions by the SMDHU. Previous measures remain in effect and now also include the following:

Limits for all organized public events and social gatherings are five people indoors or 25 people outdoors. However, the Province advises the following as part of Red level restrictions:Trips outside of the home should only be for essential reasons.Families should not visit any other household or allow visitors in their homes.Everyone should avoid social gatherings. Virtual gatherings are the safest way to visit or recognize occasions with people outside your household.

Limits for religious services rites or ceremonies, including weddings and funerals, are 30 per cent capacity of the room indoors or 100 people outdoors.

Local restaurants and bars must follow these additional restrictions, in addition to existing restrictions:Maximum number of patrons permitted to be seated indoors is 10.Outdoor dining, take out, drive through, and delivery is permitted, including alcohol.Patrons must be seated and there must be a two-metre minimum or impermeable barrier between tables. Limit of four people seated together. Screening of all patrons is required, and contact information is required for all seated customers. No buffet style service is allowed. Face coverings are required except when eating or drinking.Barrie Recreation/Community Centres and local sports/fitness facilities, as well as local sports teams, must implement these additional restrictions:10 people indoors in each class/activity or 25 people outdoors in classes. 10 people indoors in areas with weights or exercise equipment.Team sports must not be practiced or played except for training (no games or scrimmage).Activities that are likely to result in individuals coming within two metres of each other are not permitted. No contact permitted for team or individual sports, with exemption for high performance athletes.


Meeting/event spaces must implement these additional restrictions:Maximum of 10 people per facility indoors or 25 outdoors.


Retail stores must implement these additional restrictions:Malls can remain open if they ensure that any interior dining spaces inside the mall, including any tables and seating in food courts, are closed. 

Residents are reminded that these general health and safety measures remain in effect for Barrie:The Health Unit strongly advises that people only have close contact with their direct household.Workplace screening must take place.Face coverings are required in all indoor public spaces, at workplaces, and recommended in places when physical distancing is not possible.Restrict all non-essential travel and outings.Monitor for symptoms and stay home if you are sick. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, get tested.
