City awards close to $300,000 to local recreation and sport organizations

Friday, July 22, 2022

Twelve Barrie-based organizations have received a share of $298,700 in funding through the City's Recreation and Sport Community Grant, which is aimed at improving access to recreation and sport opportunities in the city.

“This important funding will help organizations innovate, or continue to deliver, encourage or support access to recreation and sport, ultimately contributing to the health and well-being of our residents," says Dan Bell, Manager of Business Services.

The list of organizations that received funding, and the amount each received, follows:

  • Barrie and District Ringette Association ($5,000)
  • Barrie Bridge Association ($7,000)
  • Barrie Elites Volleyball Club ($15,000)
  • Barrie Housing ($90,800)
  • Barrie Minor Lacrosse Association ($18,500)
  • Barrie Speed Skating Club ($4,770)
  • Barrie Women's Disc Golf ($5,630)
  • Barrie Women's Hockey Association ($15,000)
  • Kempenfelt Bay Wrestling Club ($6,000)
  • Shak's World ($50,000)
  • The Barrie Curling Club ($70,000)
  • YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka ($11,000)

Organizations were awarded funding in one of two categories: programming/events to support new or innovative recreation and sport opportunities, or capital improvement projects. Applications were evaluated using a scoring matrix, and in the context of the City of Barrie's strategic goals, the assessment criteria and program priorities. This grant operates at arm's length from all political levels of government in awarding funds.

The 2022 grant was a pilot, and the success of the program depends on a number of factors, including the overall interest in the program from eligible applicants. The continuation of the program (including the amount dispersed each year) will depend on the fund allocation in the City's budget, as determined by City Council.
