City launches map showing streets named in honour of local veterans

(Barrie, ON) – Ahead of Remembrance Day, the City of Barrie reminds residents of the many ways they can pay their respects safely from home. The City encourages everyone towear a poppy in advance of Remembrance Day, and especially on Wednesday, November 11. The Royal Canadian Legion suggests that the poppy be worn on the left lapel of a garment and/or as close to the heart as possible.

Another way to commemorate Remembrance Day this year is through anew online map showing the streets across Barrie named in honour of local soldiers, indicated by a poppy on the street sign. Through the map, residents can learn about local military members who are memorialized through street names across the City, including their occupation, rank, and memorial location.

From the South African War to present day, many local men and women have given their lives for our freedom. Exploring the map and taking the time to reflect is one way to remember the immeasurable sacrifices these people have made for our country. This map was created using research done by a Simcoe County District School Board secondary school.

In the absence of the traditional in-person ceremony at the cenotaph, there are other ways residents can pay their respects safely on November 11, including tuning into an online or televised ceremony. A livestream of a private, invite-only ceremony hosted by Barrie 's Royal Canadian Legion Branch will be available on local media websites (CTV Barrie andRogers TV) and Rogers Cable 10 on November 11.
