City looking for feedback on the vacant and excess land tax reduction program

(Barrie, ON) The City of Barrie is asking members of the public to provide input regarding potential changes to the vacant and excess land property tax discount program for industrial and commercial properties in Barrie.

The City currently provides a 35 per cent tax reduction to industrial properties and a 30 per cent tax reduction to commercial properties that are considered either vacant or excess. In 2019 there were approximately 430 such properties in the City that benefited from the tax discount, which was valued at approximately $1.5 million. The impact of the discount was shifted to other property tax classes including commercial, industrial occupied and residential.

The City is considering the following options for the program:Eliminate the program in 2021Phase out the program over two years – 2021 and 2022No change to the program

Results of the survey will be summarized in a report to Council this spring and will inform staff recommendations to Council on the future of the program.

The survey closes on March 31 and is available atbuildingbarrie.ca/VacantAndExcessLand
