Court fines Barrie landlord for multiple Fire Code violations at Georgian College-area property

(Barrie, ON) A Barrie property owner pled guilty in a POA court on June 25, 2021 to 11 charges related to violations under the Ontario Fire Code. The property, located in the Georgian College neighbourhood, was housing at least 13 people at one count.

The $6,000 judgment resulted from an investigation by Barrie Fire & Emergency Service (BFES) in January 2020, stemming from a complaint. The City, through BFES, is mandated to respond to complaints and request inspections related to fire safety concerns by the Fire Protection and Prevention Act (FPPA).

“The City takes these violations very seriously. Failure to ensure fire and life safety has a significant negative impact, not only due to the potential loss of life, but also financially," said Fire Chief Cory Mainprize. “We can't afford to be lenient when it comes to life safety."

The City reminds building owners it is their responsibility to ensure that a building is in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code at all times.
