Heritage Awards handed out to recognize properties of historical significance; Heritage Week takes place February 15-21

(Barrie, ON) TheCity of Barrie's 2020 Heritage Awards were presented at last night's City Council Meeting. These awards are presented annually by Barrie's Heritage Committee to buildings, individuals and groups who have contributed to the heritage of our community.

The three award winners for 2020 are as follows:62 William Street (residential)24 Collier Street (institutional)113 Collier Street (commercial)

Buildings must have at least two of the following attributes to be considered for the Awards:at least one hundred years oldthe property and buildings are well maintainedare sensitive to the heritage features of the property, especially if the property has been restored, rehabilitated or adaptively re-usedenhances the streetscapeassists in revitalizing the community through heritage conservation

Mayor Jeff Lehman also proclaimed February 15 to 21 as Heritage Week in the City of Barrie. The week, a province-wide celebration, is a recognition of heritage in all its forms, its diverse traditions and cultural expressions.

The City's Heritage Committee encourages residents to learn more about the city's history by taking part in virtual walking tours, researching your ancestry, or finding out more about Barrie's historical plaques and properties.
