Heritage Awards recognize strides in building preservation, awareness and commitment to historical conservation

(Barrie, ON) TheCity of Barrie's 2021 Heritage Awards will be presented at tonight's City Council Meeting. These awards are presented annually by Barrie's Heritage Committee to buildings, individuals and groups who have contributed to preserving our community heritage.

“This year's Heritage Award recipients show the value of Barrie's historical neighbourhoods and communities," says Councillor Clare Riepma, Heritage Committee Chair. “The buildings recognized are over 100 years old and are recognizable landmarks in our city, and the groups receiving awards this year stand out for their heritage contribution and commitments." 

Heritage Week is recognized province-wide the week of February 21 to 27. This week is a celebration of heritage in all its forms, its diverse traditions and cultural expressions. Heritage Week is a time to reflect on heritage contributions in Ontario and in the City of Barrie, look at how heritage is conserved, promoted and commemorated, and how the past shapes the future.

If Barrie residents are interested in having their heritage property formally recognized, they can visit the City's Heritage Register webpage atbarrie.ca/heritage for information on how to apply. The Municipal Heritage Register is a list of properties that includes Designated Buildings and Buildings of Heritage Interest. It recognizes properties of cultural heritage value, fosters civic identify and pride, promotes education of a community's cultural heritage, and provides easily accessible information about cultural heritage.
