Significant construction milestone in overpass project happening this week

(Barrie, ON) A major piece of an essential construction project in Barrie is coming together this week. During the overnight hours of May 12, 13 and 14, bridge girders will be installed to add to the Harvie Rd./Big Bay Point Rd./Highway 400 crossing currently under construction.

The contractor will put the girders in place during the overnight hours, weather permitting. Highway 400 will be closed in both directions between Mapleview Dr. and Essa Rd. for intervals of 15 minutes between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. There are 26 girders to be installed, each being 2 metres high and about 45 metres long, 13 of them spanning the northbound lanes and 13 across the southbound lanes.

Over the last five months, the following work has taken place on this project:

preparation of concrete forms and placement of structural steel for the bridge abutmentsdelivery of fill material for the Harvie Rd. and Big Bay Point Rd. embankmentsinstallation of storm sewers and watermains on Harvie Rd. west of Highway 400

This project will reduce existing traffic congestion and support growth in Barrie's south end by connecting Harvie Rd. to Big Bay Point Rd. across Highway 400. The crossing is expected to open in fall 2020.
