Council & Committees
Council is the policy-forming and decision making body of the City of Barrie. It is comprised of the Mayor and 10 Councillors (representing 10 wards) who are each elected for a four-year term..
Regular meetings of City Council are held on alternating Mondays at 7:00 p.m. (except during July), unless otherwise specified by resolution of Council and except when Monday is a holiday. Meetings are telecast live, commencing at 7:00 p.m. by Rogers Television every week.
Barrie City Council has one standing committee, General Committee. General Committee is composed of all members of Council. The Mayor presides as Chair. General Committee meetings occur every other Monday and start at 7:00 p.m. (alternate Mondays to City Council meetings).
General Committee duties include studying and reporting to Council on all matters brought to it by the Community Services Committee, Finance and Corporate Services Committee, Development Services Committee and the Transportation and Economic Development Committe which are the Four Reference Committees created by City Council. General Committee acts in the place of Council to conduct public meetings concerning Planning applications.
City Council has three Reference Committees, which report to Council when required within the terms of their mandates.
Council has also established a number of advisory committees to provide feedback on specific areas of interest. These committees report to a Reference Committee and meet on a monthly basis, or at the call of the Chair.
