Waste Reduction Week

Monday, October 16, 2023 | 9:30am–Thursday, October 19, 2023 | 1:00pm

The annual campaign for Waste Reduction Week in Canada began in 2001 by the Circular Innovation Council, a national not-for-profit.

The City of Barrie supports a circular economy, a system where the life cycles of products and items are extended and kept in circulation longer through activities such as reusing, repairing, refurbishing, repurposing or recycling. With this approach, waste is minimized and resources are maximized. One way the City supports a circular economy is by educating residents around decision-making with regards to waste.

The City of Barrie is recognizing circular economy month in October, and October 16 to 22 as Waste Reduction Week with events happening for the Barrie community throughout the week. Events are hosted in partnership with the Barrie Public Library

October 16: “Circular Economy Monday”

October 18: “E-Waste Wednesday”

October 19: “Plastics Thursday”

Rethink Waste!

The City's landfill has a finite amount of available space for municipal solid waste disposal. It is expected to last until 2035. The cost of closing the landfill is estimated at over $6.5 million and site maintenance is approximately $500,000/year for the first 25 years (landfills are typically monitored for 50 years after closure).

By rethinking different types of waste and making decisions that support a circular economy, you can help prolong the life of Barrie's landfill and contribute to efforts in solving global environmental challenges.
