Brightening Barriers is a temporary public art project that brings original works by local, regional, and provincial artists to patios throughout the downtown. With patio fencing serving as a canvas, Brightening Barriers offers an opportunity to turn “barriers" into a collective artistic experience.

The exhibition brings a free and accessible cultural event to the community and animates the downtown corridor with points of interest. Residents and visitors are invited to explore downtown Barrie and support local businesses while appreciating the variety of artwork on display.

This project, organized by the Barrie Public Art Committee, supports visual artists by highlighting regional artists and original works of art.

2026 Exhibition

Calling Local & Ontario-Based Artists!

Theme: Rhythms of the City
Compensation: Up to six awards of $5,000 CAD each (inclusive of taxes)
Deadline: Friday, March 13, 2026, by 11:59pm EST

The City and the Barrie Public Art Committee are seeking to commission up to six artworks to enhance seasonal patio fencing into a collective artistic experience for the 2026 Brightening Barriers season. The commissioned artists/artist teams will be selected through a single-stage process.

For the first time, this year’s call for artists includes a theme: Rhythms of the City. This theme explores the patterns, movement, and energy that shape the City of Barrie. Collectively the selected works will create a cohesive visual rhythm across downtown Barrie.

The selected artwork will be on display from May 15 to September 21, 2026, and will bring a free and accessible cultural experience to the City of Barrie and animate the downtown corridor with points of interest along Dunlop, Collier and Simcoe Streets. Each installation will be affixed to a patio fence generously provided by a local business.

Brightening Barriers provides an opportunity to contribute to Barrie’s public realm and engage the community through creative expression. Since 2021, Brightening Barriers has showcased a variety of artistic voices in a wide range of media.

2025 Exhibition

For the fifth year, the City's Brightening Barriers public art exhibition returned May 16–September 26, 2025, featuring six art installations from new and emerging artists located in Barrie and beyond. Artists were compensated for their work. New for 2025, the City offered a mentorship program to selected artists who were new to public art.
