City reduces residential development charges to help deliver more housing

(Barrie, ON) – The City of Barrie is taking action to support new housing development and improve housing affordability by reducing residential development charges.

At its meeting on September 16, 2026, Barrie City Council approved an amendment to the City's Development Charge By-law that reduces residential development charge rates by 50 per cent. The reduced rates take effect September 17, 2026, and will be applied retroactively to building permits issued on or after March 30, 2026.

The reduction is intended to encourage residential development, help increase housing supply, and support the construction of new homes in Barrie.

This move reflects the City's ongoing commitment to supporting housing growth and creating conditions that help deliver more housing options for current and future residents.
