Landfill Site

Compost & Mulch Available

Finished compost is currently available for purchase and mulch is available for free at the landfill. Please bring a shovel and containers for loading your own compost or mulch, and wear appropriate footwear. If you’re also disposing of materials, advise the scalehouse attendant as you will need to weigh in/out twice.

Compost Rates

  • $10 for Large Load 
    Up to 1.5 cubic metres (truck or trailer load)
  • $5 for Small Load
    Up to 0.3 cubic metres (bucket or car load)
  • Commercial & Non-resident
    $25/tonne
    $10 minimum

The City charges a fee to help recoup part of the costs associated with producing the compost, including equipment, temperature monitoring and sampling of material throughout the process to meet regulatory requirements.

Residential brush tipping fees waived

The City is waiving residential brush tipping fees at the landfill until May 31 to support ice storm cleanup. The Recycling Depot, located at the lower gate area of the site is temporarily accepting small loads of residential brush debris. Large loads/commercial traffic must use the upper landfill/scales.

The landfill is experiencing a high volume of traffic, and residents may experience wait times. Please be patient as we work to manage the increased demand.

The Barrie landfill site, located at 272 Ferndale Drive North, is open to Barrie residents only. Please be prepared to show photo Identification upon entering the landfill. Entry will be denied without photo I.D.

To support the ice storm cleanup, the landfill has extended depot hours every Saturday until May 31: 8:30am–6:30pm

The landfill site includes:

  • Waste & Recycling Depot
    Open Tuesday to Saturday*, 8:30am–3:30pm. Located at the top of the hill, past the scalehouse. Hours are extended to 6:30pm each Saturday until May 31.
  • Household Hazardous Waste Facility 
    Open Saturdays only*, 8:30am–3:30pm. Located at the top of the hill, past the scalehouse.
  • Recycling Depot
    Open for the season Tuesday to Saturday*, 8:30am–3:30pm. Located at the bottom of the hill. Hours are extended to 6:30pm each Saturday until May 31.
  • Environmental Education Centre
    Programs are on hold.

    *The landfill site is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday, and Canada Day. The site closes at noon on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

The City of Barrie landfill is waiving residential brush tipping fees until Saturday, May 31 to support cleanup from the recent ice storm. Mulch is currently being offered for free.

Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHWF)

The HHWF is open is open on Saturdays only, 8:30am to 3:30pm. The HHWF is located at the landfill site at the top of the hill, past the scale house. Residents must ​show valid I.D. before proceeding to the HHWF. Household hazardous waste materials are also accepted at the Recycling Depot, open seasonally.

Recycling Depot

The Recycling Depot is open for the 2025 season. The depot is located at the lower gate area of the City’s landfill site. This facility helps reduce wait times and make dropping off recycling and household hazardous waste materials more efficient.

The Recycling Depot is temporarily accepting small loads of residential brush debris, as residential brush tipping fees are being waived until Saturday, May 31 to support ice storm cleanup. Large loads/commercial traffic must use the upper landfill/scales.

The depot is open seasonally from April until late November from Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30am to 3:30pm (rain or shine)​​. Until May 31, 2025, the depot is open until 6:30pm on Saturdays to support ice storm cleanup. Opening and closing dates are generally determined by snow melt (April) and snow fall (November).

Environmental Education Centre

The Environmental Education Centre was designed to provide a place to educate about Barrie’s waste management programs through play-based learning activities. It is usually open from the beginning of May until the end of September.

Due to budgetary and resourcing challenges, education and outreach programs linked with solid waste, recycling and compost operations are currently on hold. Please stay tuned for additional information.
