The Barrie landfill site, located at 272 Ferndale Drive North, is open to Barrie residents only. Please be prepared to show photo Identification upon entering the landfill. Entry will be denied without photo I.D.
The City's landfill has a finite amount of available space for municipal solid waste disposal. It is expected to last until 2035. The cost of closing the landfill is estimated at over $6.5 million and site maintenance is approximately $500,000/year for the first 25 years (landfills are typically monitored for 50 years after closure).
By rethinking different types of waste and making decisions that support a circular economy, you can help prolong the life of Barrie's landfill and contribute to efforts in solving global environmental challenges.

Notes re Specific Items for Disposal
The Recycling Depot is at the lower gate area of the City’s landfill site. This facility helps reduce wait times and make dropping off recycling and household hazardous waste materials more efficient.
The Recycling Depot is currently closed for the season. The depot is open seasonally from April until late November from Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30am to 3:30pm (rain or shine). Opening and closing dates are generally determined by snow melt (April) and snow fall (November).
The Environmental Education Centre was designed to provide a place to educate about Barrie’s waste management programs through play-based learning activities. It is usually open from the beginning of May until the end of September.
Programs On Hold Until 2023
Due to budgetary and resourcing challenges associated with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic recovery, education and outreach programs linked with solid waste, recycling and compost operations are currently on hold. We intend to resume these programs in the second half of 2023.
