In addition to This Month in Barrie, residents can stay informed about City services, initiatives, and more through a variety of the City’s communications channels, including the City’s free mobile app, City e-news, posters, rack cards, monitors in community centres, direct mail campaigns, social media (Facebook, X, Instagram) and through the Barrie Compass website where weekly city news is shared.
The City also partners with Rogers TV for Barrie: City on the Move, to help people without access to the internet, computers or smartphones stay informed on City issues.
Background
The City previously distributed This Week in Barrie (TWIB) each Thursday in the printed edition of The Barrie Advance. Effective Friday, September 15, 2023, the Barrie Advance community newspaper moved to a digital-only model.
The closure of the local printed newspaper affected residents who relied on it for community news. Per Council Motion 24-G-152, the City has embarked on a pilot initiative for advertising City programs, services, and initiatives in the Barrie Compass.
The new Barrie Compass offers an opportunity to keep residents informed about City-related news, events, and activities by distributing a printed version of their news each month.
