• Program Monitors

  The instructor, sports position leads and facilitates beginner to intermediate level sports programs. Overall, this position plays an integral role in the delivery of comprehensive and enjoyable recreation sports programs and ensures the safety and well-being of program participants.

  Referee (PT)

  The Referee position is responsible for officiating sports games for City of Barre sport leagues. Specifically, this position enforces the rules of the game and ensures that all players are abiding by the rules. Overall, this position plays and integral role in the delivery of safe, fair and enjoyable league programs at the City of Barrie.

  Fitness Attendant (PT)

  The fitness attendant position oversees the activities of gym patrons to ensure proper and safe use of fitness machines, free weights and cardio equipment. Overall, this position plays an integral role in the operation of the City’s fitness centres to enable the City of Barrie to deliver fitness services that allow residents to live healthy and active lives.

  Fitness Instructor (PT) 

  The fitness instructor position leads and facilitates various fitness classes such as Zumba, Pilates and Yoga while ensuring the safety, well-being and enjoyment of participants. Overall, this position plays an integral role in enabling the City to provide comprehensive and enjoyable recreation active living programs to its residents by instructing fitness classes for all age groups.

  The Fitness Monitor (PT) acts as the first point of contact for customers of the City of Barrie’s fitness centres. Specifically this position provides front-line customer service at one of the City’s fitness centres. Overall, this position plays an integral role in the operation of the City’s Fitness Centres to enable the City of Barrie to deliver fitness services that allow residents to live healthy and active lives.

  Personal Trainers (PT) are responsible for providing one on one fitness training. Specifically, this position develops and delivers customized workout plans for clients. Overall, this position plays an integral role in helping customers of the City of Barrie’s fitness centre achieve their fitness goals through education and learning.

• Lifeguard-Instructor

  The Lifeguard-Instructor is responsible for ensuring the safety of class participants and lifeguard's guests at the City of Barrie’s aquatic facilities. This position teaches the lifesaving skill of swimming through our Swim for Life Program.

  Required Certifications

  The following certifications are to be completed by, and at the expense of the applicant and must be obtained and submitted to the Aquatic Team prior to an applicant’s first day of employment:

  • National Lifeguard - Pool
  • Swim Instructor
  • Standard First Aid & CPR Level C
  • HIGH FIVE- PHCD (Principles of Healthy Childhood Development)
  • Lifesaving Instructor is recommended.

  • Lifeguard Wet Screening 
    This wet lifeguard screening is for individuals interested in working for the City of Barrie Aquatics Team. At this screening you will have your strokes and skills evaluated. To attend this screening you should be 15 years of age or older and have at least ONE of the following certifications: National Lifeguard - Pool or Swim Instructor. Please bring all your certifications and your Lifesaving Society ID to the screening.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check
    Lifeguard-Instructors must maintain satisfactory status during employment with the City of Barrie.
• Aquatic Course Conductor

  The Aquatics Course Conductor (National Lifeguard Service) (PT) position is responsible for instructing, evaluating, and certifying candidates in the Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Service training program, in accordance with certifications requirements laid out by the Lifesaving Society. 

• Aquafitness Instructor

  The Aqua Fitness instructor position leads and facilitates various aqua fitness classes while ensuring the safety, well-being and enjoyment of participants. Overall, this position plays an integral role in enabling the City to provide comprehensive and enjoyable recreation active living programs to its residents by instructing fitness classes for all age groups.

• Camp Convenor

  The Camp Convenor coordinates and oversees the City of Barrie’s camps with responsibilities including program scheduling, development, and delivery, staff training and customer service. This position oversees approximately 150 campers ranging from four to 14 years of age, while leading and coaching 30 to 40 Camp Staff including Senior Camp Leaders, Camp Leaders and Volunteers.

  Experience Requirement: Six months of related camp experience including child minding and camp programming

• Senior Camp Leader

  The Senior Camp Leader provides hands on leadership to staff, volunteers and participants of the City of Barrie’s camps with responsibilities including the development, planning, and delivery of a comprehensive camp program. This position is responsible for the safety and well-being of up to 60 campers ranging from four to 14 years of age, while leading and coaching up to 15 staff including Camp Leaders and Volunteers.

  Experience Requirement: Four months of related camp experience including child minding and camp programming

• Camp Leader

  The Camp Leader runs day-to-day camp activities for a group of campers in one of the City of Barrie’s camps. This position is responsible for the safety and well-being of a group of six to 10 campers ranging from four to 14 years of age, while providing guidance and mentorship to Volunteers.

  Experience Requirement: Previous camp experience and/or experience attending camps as a participant is considered an asset

• Inclusion Camp Convenor

  The Inclusion Camp Convenor coordinates and oversees the City of Barrie’s adapted/integrated camps with responsibilities including inclusion program scheduling, development, and delivery, staff training and customer service. This position oversees approximately 50 to 100 campers with special needs ranging from four to 18+ years of age, while leading and coaching 15 to 20 Inclusion Camp Staff including Senior Inclusion Camp Leaders, Inclusion Camp Leaders and Inclusion Volunteers.

  Experience Requirement: Six months of related camp experience, including experience working with persons with disabilities, child minding and camp programming

• Senior Inclusion Camp Leader

  The Senior Inclusion Camp Leader provides hands on leadership to staff, volunteers and participants of the City of Barrie’s adapted/integrated camps with responsibilities including the development, planning, and delivery of a comprehensive inclusion camp program. This position is responsible for the safety and well-being of up to 20 campers with special needs ranging from four to 18+ years of age, while leading and coaching up to 10 staff including Inclusion Camp Leaders and Inclusion Volunteers.

  Experience Requirement: Four months of related camp experience, including experience working with persons with disabilities, child minding and camp programming.

• Inclusion Camp Leader

  The Inclusion Camp Leader runs day-to-day camp activities for campers with special needs in one of the City of Barrie’s adapted/integrated camps. This position is responsible for the safety and well-being of campers ranging from four to 18+ years of age, primarily on a one-on-one basis or within an adapted camp environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

• I require multiple weeks off from work during the summer months. Can I still obtain a position within day camp?

  As a successful applicant, you will be required to work the entire duration of the summer. Summer contracts run from the last week of June/first week of July to the last week of August/first week of September. Requesting one day off may result in not being scheduled for the full week.

• I don’t have all of my qualifications right now, can I still apply?

  Yes. The City provides opportunities to obtain qualifications. Copies of all qualifications are due to your respective Recreation Programmer​ no later than the first day of camp.

• Do these positions require a vehicle?

  Most positions do not require a vehicle; however, staff can be placed at any camp location. See job descriptions regarding vehicle requirements.

• How many weeks of work will I receive for summer camps employment?

  The number of weeks Summer Camp Staff receive is job dependent with a minimum of 4 weeks to a maximum of 9 or 10 weeks. Camp Convenors will receive a minimum of 14 weeks to a maximum of 18 weeks of work.

• I’ll be 16 years old in January of next year. Can I still apply and obtain a position?

  No.

  For camps positions, all successful applications are to be a minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year and must have attended an academic establishment the year in which applying for employment and/or are returning to an academic establishment the following year.

  For aquatics positions, all successful applications are to be a minimum of 16 years of age in accordance with Lifesaving Society standards.
