The following awards are presented by the Mayor and/or committees of Council.

Order of the Spirit Catcher Awards

In 2025, the youth and adult award categories are returning, and there is a new award category to recognize seniors. Nominations were due by May 30, 2025.

The City of Barrie recognizes citizens (adults, youth, and seniors) who have made outstanding contributions to their communities by volunteering their time and energy for others. The City's Order of the Spirit Catcher Awards are the highest honour bestowed by the City for volunteers who have provided outstanding service to our community. This was established in 2000 and has since expanded to include a Youth Spirit Catcher Award and a Senior Spirit Catcher Award. 

Individuals considered for these awards must be a resident of Barrie and exemplify one or more of the following attributes:

  • An individual who has selflessly devoted their time and energy to help others;
  • Has made a significant long-term contribution to the lifestyle of the community and/or;
  • Through exceptional achievement, has benefited others and brought honour to the City of Barrie.

Nominations are reviewed by the Order of the Spirit Catcher Committee.

Barrie Heritage Awards

The Heritage Barrie Committee annually seeks nominations for property owners and individuals who've made strides in fostering local identity through heritage preservation and awareness in Barrie. All residents are invited to submit nominations during a promoted annual call for nominations.

Mayor's Innovation Awards

The Mayor's Innovation Awards discover stories of strength, creativity and adaptation from across the city of Barrie. These annual awards recognize businesses, individuals and organizations whose innovative approaches and sheer determination contribute to a resilient foundation for our city.
